1t is a great pity to see the once great producing island of Cu- ba—“The Garden of the South”’—now a dreary waste, the out- come of international and civil strife. 1t sets one’s heart sick to think of it. But, wait one moment, and you will see somebady's heart sick on our ‘Garden of the North” before the summer is over, the oatcoune ef giving vheir orders for “Crayon Portraits’ &e. to the foreign agents, who will patrol on this Island very soon. 1 am getting well fortified in my line of enlarging Photos and Tintypes. My agents also form a strong squadron and 1 think if foreigners get a mule for a vrize they will do well.

1l y avait jadis un vieux ma- rin connu dans tout le pavs de Dieppe sous le surnom de ‘“Com- père Matelot.” 11 habitait avec son ami Joel, pêcheur comme lui, une petite cabane au bord de la mer.

Compère Matelot était nor- mand. Honnête et craignant Dieu, on ne Jui connaissait qu'un qu'un seul défaut : l’a- mour des cartes! Ce n’est pas pourtant que la chance l’encou- rageñt, car il perdait toujours. N'importe, quand il avait fait bonne pêche, il ne manqgnait pas de jouer jusqu’au derurer sou le produit de la vente de son pois- son.

Le breton Joel était franc et brave ; mais il avait une soif chronique qui lui faisait vider plus de cruches le dimanche qu'il ne disait de prières. À rai- son de quoi, le dévot Compère Matelot ne cessait de lui répé- ter ‘‘Pour sûr, Joel, tu feras une mauvaise fin !”

Un jour que Compère Mate- let était seul à raccommoder ses filets, il vit entrer un pèlerin

blonds, qui paraissait très fati- gué et qui lui demanda l’hospi- talité pour la nuit :

“Je ne suis qu'un pauvre hère, dit le pêcheur, et le logis n'est pas cossu ; mais tel qu’il est, avec tout ce qui s'y trouve, votre serviteur compris, il est bien à votre disposition.

—Je vous remercie au fond du cœur, répartit l'étranger, seulement je dois vous préve- nir qu'il ya là aouze pèlerins qui m'accompagnent : et peut- être allez-vous trouver que

À peine âme de Compère Matelot ent-elle quitté son corps, qu'elle prit son essor vers le Ciel. |

Elle était déjà haut quand elle aperçut un bizarre voya- geur qui filait par la traverse dans la direction op posée. Il portait un sac volumi- peux sur ses épaules :

“Qu'avez-vous là-dedans ? demanda compère Matelot à cet être étrange qui avait un mu- seau noir, deux cornes au front, jan nez crochu, des yeux de sou- fre et des ongles à faire frémir tant ils étaient longs et acérés.

—Tout de même, Monsieur le Diable, ce n’est pas de refus, dit l’avisé Compère Matelot. 11 semble que, comme moi, vous ayez besoin d’un peu de repos, et, le temps seulement de faire une petite partie de piquet, on se retrouverait frais et gai:lard pour continuer chacun sa route ue Et même, tenez ! si vous le voulez bien, je vous jouerai men âme contre celle que vous avez là.

Ils s’assirent sur un nuage et commencèrent à jouer. Com- père Matelot avait une chance incroyable, toutes les bonnes cartes lui venaient en mains. Le diable eut beau faire, il perdit la partie.

Ce disant, Compère Matelot mit à bouillir une copieuse soupe au poisson ; puis il posa sur Ja table une énorme miche de pain noir et des pichets de cidre frais...Après le repas, le marin couvrit le sol de la ca- bane d’une épaisse jonchée de paille.

Souhaitant alors une bonne puit aux treize convives, il les invita à se reposer de leurs fa- tigues.

Le jiendemain,} le voyageur aux yeux bleus lui dit, en le quittant

“Je suis Jésus-Christ et c.s pèlerins sont mes douze apôtres. Vous êtes un brave homme, Compère Matelot, et je veux re- connaitre ce que vous avez fait pour nous. Si vous souhaitez quelque chose, demandez-le moi, je puis vous Cxaucer.”

Le Normand se gratta l’o- rellle :

“Dame, je vas vous dire, mur- mura t-il un peu embarrassé, je perds toujours aux cartes et je voudrais bien y gagner tant seu lement une pauvre fois...

Et il s’éloigna, suivi de ses douze compagnons. douze compagnons.

Le même jour, Compère Ma- telot et Joel partirent pour la pêche. Uae tempête effroyable

Quand Compère Matelot fut en vue de la Lorte du Paradis, l’Archange, placé en sentinelle, cria : “Qui vive !.......

Un peu plus loin, se trouvait Saint-Pierre, qui lui fit un ex- cellent accueil, lui souhaitant la bienvenue, en l’appelant par son nom. Mais tout-à-coup avi- sant le sac dont Compère Mate lot était chargé : “Qu’apportez vous donc là, notre ami ?

laisser entrer à deux chez vous! Après cela, il faudrait donc avoir à dire que les homwes sont plus honnêtes et plus hospitaliers que les Saints.

“Ouvrez la porte à deux bat-

tants !” cominanda Ja douce voix du voyageur aux yeux bleus, aux cheveux olonds.

Compère Matelot se précipita à genoux et déposa son fardeau aux pieds de Jésus : “C'est par votre grâce, dit-ii, que j'ai ga- gné l'enjeu que voici, et pour une pauvre fois que je gagne, on voudrait m'eulever mon pro- fit !

Ouvre le sac !” se contenta de répondre Jésus.

Compère Mateloi obéit l’âme qui en sortit éperdue de joie et de reconnaissance, était celle du pauvre Joel.

Et voilà comme quoi Joel dut à son ami. Compère Matelot, d’a- voir esquivé la mauvaise fin qu'il lui avait tant de fois pré- dite ! ;
