At midniglit it does not seem possible, in the absence of returns from a large number of constituencies, to makea correct estimate of the results of the elections.

All that can be positively asserted is that the cities and great centres of influence have, with the exception of Hamilton, gone with the opponents of the Mowat Govern- ment.

Ottawa, which was represented in the old House by a Grit, rejected him and elected a Conservative.

Kingston elected a Conservative.

In London the leader of the Local Op- position is elected by 450 majority.

In Toronto, where the Mowatt party made a tremendous fight, Premier Mowatt himself was defeated and both seats have fallen into the hands of the Local Opposi- tion.

Hon. Mr. Fraser, Commissioner of Pub-

-{lic Works, who, like Mr. Mowatt, was run-

ning for two seats, was like him, deteated in one of them, his old constituency of South Grenville.

Returns to midnight show that the Mowatt Government had lost the following seats, which they held in the late House, viz : Glengarry , South Grenvi lle, Kingston, Ottawa, Stormount and South W entworth, while their opponents lost Lincoln, Len. nox, South Ontario, North Renfrew and Russell.

Later telegrams may change these posi- tions somewhat and extend the list on either side.

It appears that §1 places had been heard from, and the returns from five are not in, the elections i in the two sections of Algoma and Muskoka not having taken place.

The result appears to be as follows, so far as heard from:

The suin of $100,000 has been promised for the sufferers by the Alessandria floods and the eruption of Etna. This amount, however, is considered far from sufficient.

The Chamber of Deputies has voted 500,000 livres for the rehef of sufferers by the eruption at Mount Etna and inunda- tions of the river Po.

The Ultramontanes will refuse to vote the duties on tobacco, beer and spirits, un- less they receive tangible ‘concessions in ecclesiastical matters. If Bismarck refuses the concessions, the dissolution of the Reichstag is probable.

The Prussian Government has offered to grant a site for the new Imperial Parliament House in Bertin.

A Vienna correspondent says : Relations between Russia and Turkey are cooler in consequence uf the events attending the in- stallation of Aleko Pasha. The Sultan particularly begins to doubt Russia’s sin- cerity because of the discovery of corres- pondence between Slav committees in Rus- sia and branches throughout Turkey, show- ing a design for a union of all Bulgarians in accordance with the treaty of San Ste- fano.

It is stated in official circles that Eng- land has joined Germany in a _ protest}! against the arbitrary manner in which the Khedive’s degree of April 4th dealt with the creditors of the Egyptian Government. Although solicited by Germany to join in the protest, Russia holds aloof.

SERLIN, A Special Comniittee of the Bandesrath has reported favorably en the bill reserv- ing to the Empire the right of fixing rates of ¢ carriage on a uniform basis for all Ger- man Railways and abolishing freight rates which were unduly favorable to, articles produced abroad.

INTERNATIONALISTS SENTENCED. Frorence, June 5. The Internationalists who threw bombs among a crowd last November have been sentenced : one to imprisonment for life, another for twenty years, and four for nineteen years.

AND’S WARS. Sima, June 5. The Ameer of Afghanistan will start for Cabul on the 8th inst. After a tour of in- spection throughout the kingdom, he will visit the Viceroy of India. The tour will end next winter. ©
