Field Hockey Panthers Blocked From Nationals: Unpaid Dues Leave Atlantic Champions At Home

The University of Prince Edward Island Panthers Field Hockey team

persevered, and after 30 years of

waiting, was finally awarded a well- deserved championship. Finishing an undefeated year with a 9-0-3 record, the girls went 3-0-1 in the tournament which was held at the Elmer G. MacDonald soccer complex in Hunter River. The girls defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 4-0 on the drizzly, windy field. Goals in the huge victory came from Nicole Wagner, who notched two, as well as Susan Brown and Jessica Hammill. Jenna MacPhee claimed her second shutout of the weekend and her

remarkable ninth goose egg of the year.

The ladies’ coach, Tracey Gairns who was a UPEI Panther from 1998 to

2003, was awarded coach of the year in her first year at the helm. Four outstanding Panthers were recognized as All-Stars for their superb efforts: Kim Baglole, Katie Lee, Nicole Wagner, and Sarah MacAuley. MacAuley, in her first year with the team, also earned rookie of the year honors.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, the

university administration opted not to pay the team’s CIS dues. This lack of funding will see them stay at home while SMU will advance to the championships in Ontario. This year the girls have shown that a hard-working, talented field hockey team can endure here at UPEI and with any luck, next year the administration will give them the respect they all deserve.
