THIRTY-ONE ARRESTS IN MONTll-— In the Police report for the month of January, Chief A. Birtwhistle reported 3i arrests in the city. The mo"t common offence during this period was that of vag- rancy, l1 persons being arrested on this charge. Second to this was the common drunks, of which there were 10 arrested. HEALTH REPORT - Births ex- ceeded deaths by l5 in the City of Charlottetown during the month of January this year, it was revealed in the Health Report submitted by Dr. B. C. Keeping, Deputy Ministol- of Health, at the City Council meet- ing Monday night There were 22 births and seven death; Marriages totalled ll. Two cases of spinal meri- lngftis and five cases of scarlet fev- er occurred in Charlottetown dur- ling the month. The sanitary offic- er, Mr. M.W. Reardon. reported that he had quarantined four houses in the city during the month oi’ Janu- ary.

PREPARE FOR. CAMPAIGN —- A meeting was held last evening for the pirrpose of starting the organi- zation for the Canadian War" Ser- vices Fund, the campaign for which will open throughout Canada on the 24th of March. The organizations taking part are: Canadian Lemon. Knights of Columbus, Y. M. C. A.. and salvation Army. The meeting was convened by Mr. D. J. Bonnell, who did so at the request oi’ Gen- eral A. D. McRae, National Chair- man. Mr Bonnell was appointed provincial chairman. Major T. E. McNutt was appointed Secretary and Mr. M. A. Farmer, Treasurer. The whole provincial organization will be announced shortly.

FIRE DEPARTMENT MEETING -'Ill1e executive of the Charlotte- town Fire Department, consisting of Chief Angus MaoEachern. Cap- tain L. A. Stewart, Captain H. Jewel and Secretary Arthur Henry, was re-elected at the annual meet- ing held in the Fire Hall, Chief MacEachem. Music club Debates romantic, Classic periods

An interesting and must instruc- tive departure from the usual, mark- ed the (fleeting of the Women's Mu- sic Club, which was held in the Charlottetown Hotel last evening. the entire program being given over to a debate as to the merits of the Romantic versus the Classic periods in music, ably illustrated by var"- ious musical selections of the two lmriods. Mlsl Davida Baker opened the debate for the Romantic composer's stressing particularly the works of Beethoven mid Schubert. In a very clear and decisive manner. Miss Ba- ker brought out. some splendid ar- guments m fzivor of the Romantic- ist", whose music is an expression of feeling and emotion rather than that of form as expressed in the Classic composers. Illustrating the points that Miss Baker was trying to make. Mrs. Full played Beethoven's "Moonlight" Sonata and Miss Deb's Owen sang Schubert's "My Peace Thou Art."

Taking the side of the Classic fvfllbosers, Miss ‘Baker was followed by Mrs. Charles MacKenzie who by her very definition of the word Classic, which she defined as "ac- cepted as of the highest. rank. ;e.'v- mg as u standard. model or guide," made a.
