Laurier continues Debate On Address

PROHIBITION

Poster Shows up the Absurd Claims of the Government.

Oirawa, March 22.--Iathe Houee of Commons, Laurier continued the debate on the address.

Referring to the Plebiscite he said the pledge bad been made by the Liberal party in convention that a pleb'scite should be taken, and a plebiscite had been taken.

The result was that only 23 per cent of the people had pronounced in favor of‘ prohibition, and as the leader of the Liberal party and with a full sense of the responsibility of what he was saying, he had no ‘hesitation in saying that there was never any intention in adopting pro- hibition nnless a majority of the electorste pronounced in favor of it.

With reference to the fast Atlantic ser- vice he admitted that the Government had done nothing; but he hoped it would be able to do something some ‘ime.

He took up the Washington Commis. sion and defended ihe commission from the charges made against it of takiuga very long time to do very little.

Foster made an able address treating of the Grit combinations, the trade and tariff policy, and their juggling of accounts to conceal thetrue deficit. Tariff reduction, he showed, was only three one huodred’s of one per cent,

—The Guard an’s Ottawa despatch says: “Mr. J. H. Bel!, who moved the address, made an excellent speech, but carefully avoided all refereuce to the pro- hibition question. This is noticeable as he is known to be a prohibitionist. ” Thus one by one the Guardian’s idols are being shattered.

Mr. McLean died Thursday morning as | a result of a stroke ot paralysis, Als) though he had reached the age of 85 | years, aod had been an iavalid for the past 16 yeare, he was up and about ap | to within a covple of months before his | death.

Mr. McLean wasa native of Cardigan, Prioce Edward Island, and was born in 1814. At the age of twelve he wae appreas ticed to a shipbuilder. On arriving at his mejority he came to the Btates, ever since working at hie trade in all the big ship- building yards of the country. He was a, shipbuilder of the old school, and in his 65 years of work was employed on eome of the | stanchest vessels afloat, racing yachts.

He was married in 1864. Five years ago bis wife died.

The pallbearers were his four nephews. Mr. McLean Jeft three daughters and two eons. The interment wok place at , Arlington. —Boston Globe, March 18tb.

Quite a large meeting took plece last evening to hear the paper read before the Natural Histery and Antiquarian Society by Mr. Watson, descriptive of a plant which grew in a human tkrost. The subject was treated both from its botani- cvl and biological aspects. A full and minute description of the throatand con+ tiguous parts was given. The possibility of aseed obtaininga lodgment, germin-

a ing and growing there were considered aud treated with a good desl of detail. A num ber of authorities were cited ia support of the views taken in the paper.

A lengthy discussion fillowed, the main points of which were the possibilty of a seed in such a position, growing and described as this one, which was decided tobe a lemon, had. Amongst thore who participated in the discussion were Drs. Beer and McLeod, Messrs. McCready, Doull, Palmer, McSwain, Bentley and the President of ihe Society. Staterments corroborative of those contained ia the paper were wade by Messrs, Hughes and Saunders, both of whom hada _ personal knowledge of the history of this particuler plant.

Atthe next meeting of the society, to be held a fortnight hence, the President, Mr. John Neweon, will read @ paper on @ geological subject.

Talmage’s Resignation Accepted.

Wassinoton, March |8--The resignas tion of the Rev. Dr. De Witt Talmage, as pas.or of the First Presbyterian church has been accepted. The resolution aceept ing the resignation contained no express- siou whatever of regret at his withdrawal, avd no provision was made to send bima letter of regret. The resignation takes effect immediately, but no successor was provided for. Dr. Talmage is now travell ing inthe south. He was connected with the church about four years.
