It is true sometimea that gladness

Has with it a touch of sadness. -Old Mother Nature.

The Green Forest was turning yellow. red and brown. and the color were all mixed. Every day when Peter Rabbit looked outtl from the dear Old Briar Patch tncl Green Forest was R. little more- red and :4 little more yellow and! brown. Because of this It was all little more lovely. She had even touched with color the clear Old Briar Patch.

What is more he hasn't been around more than once or twice so far. and then he didn't stay long enough to do any painting of the Green Forest. even if he could."

"No. I don't know anything 0! the kind. Who says so?" asked Mrs. Peter.

"Why-why everybody says so." cried Peter. -

"Then everytbody is mistaken." rctortecl little Mrs. Peter. ”You can see for yoursell what has hap- pened, and if you stop to think you will know that Jack Frost couldn't have done it, because much of it was done before Jack Frost got here at all. and he hasn't. been here any night. long enough to do any painting."

Peter thought it over. It was true. He remembered now that certain leaves had begun to turn from green to red or yellow be- fore any one had even thought of Jack Frost and his coming. He had always believed that it was Jack Frost who had painted the Green Forest and the roadside trees and the Old Orchard and some of the bushes. "But if Jack Frost doesn't do it. who does it?" he cried.

"Don't ask me," re-plied little Mrs. Peter. ”Perhaps Lovely Lady Autumn does it herself. but it certainly isn't Jack Frost. Per- haps there would be all this 1W- iiness if Jack Frost didn't come at all.”

A yellow leaf, like drifting sunshine. floated down past Peter. He watched it settle lightly on the ground. Mrs. Peter saw it too. "It is It wonder you don't say that Jack Frost made that lea! fall," said She.

"I guess I would liave once." replied Peter quite honestly. "I guess I was mistaken."

"I don't guess anything about it; I know." retorted Mrs. Peter.

it. goes without saying that East couiril have beaten the hand by leading a diamond instead of the third club. but his real mistake was in making the spade shirt at the third trick. Th9l;e was nothing to be gained by "touching" the spade still.
