The show of pigs was an average one.

by the spectators. HORSES.

The exhibit of horses is admitted by all to be the finest ever witnessed in the Pro- vince. Over one hundred and twenty animals were exhibited. In all classes, competition was keen, and the Judges, in many instances, were severely taxed in giving correct decisions. At few exhibitions are so many beautiful specimens of horse flesh shown. The stock parade on the ground to-day was a grand affair. Those who witnessed it little wonder at the island being a successful competitor against the whole Dominion in horses.

In carriage Stallions the show was a

fine one. Nineof the most beautiful, well turned and symmetrical horses owned in the Province were

brought into the ring. The competition was very sharp. Hernando, the beautiful carriage stallion imported from the cele- brated farm of General Withers, Kentucky, and owned by Hon. Neil McLeod, was awarded first, and handsome Royal Harry, four years eld, owned by Mr. J. A. Mc- Millan, Brackley Point Road, was awarded second, and a splendid Royal Harry, called Roya) Frenchman, owned by Mr. John T. Rodd, of Milton, received third. The owners of horses unsuccessful in com- petition against the three above named prize winners, had nothing to be ashamed of. The stallions to breed from for trotting or road purposes were a handsome lot. A “Royal Harry” owned by Mr. Henry Lane, called ‘‘Mount Mellick Boy,” received, as he well deserved, first prize. He is one of, if not the handsomest stal- lion in the Province. He is « bright bay with beautiful black points and would show to fine advantage at any fair. In this class a splendid young ‘‘All Right” Stallion **Robbie,” owned by Mr. Geo. Dockendoff, took second; and a ‘‘Jeff,” owned by Mr. James H. Dingwell, Mare, carried off third. The carriage colts under two and three years were very good, while the carriage mares with foals were excellent. In the class—carriage fillies under three years— competition was keenest. Seventeen com- peted for the prizes, and in the whole num- ber one could not be found which was not worthy of exhibition, if not a prize. A ‘Royal Harry” filly, owned by Henry Longworth, Esq., was awarded first, and a filly by Rodd’s ‘‘Royal Harry Jr.,” owned by Mr. Wallace Rodd, Brackley Point Road, got second, and Mr. Charles Stewart's filly received third. Some par- ticularly handsome carriage foals were to be seen. The first prize was carried off — nine competitors by a foal owned by enry B. Smith, Esq., of this city.

The show of foals sired by Hernando was fine indeed, and very creditable to their owners and the sire. Chas. Dockendorfl's filly was awarded first, Mr. Norman Mc- Leod’s filly from the dam of Blackfoot, second, and Dr. Dodd’s filly—Royal Harry dam—third.

The show of cart horses, colts and fillies, was an exceedingly good one. At no previous exhibition has such fine cart stallions and mares, and so many promising cart colts and fillies been seen. The get of Barrister, the superior cart stallion owned

by Mr. J. D. Mcleod of this city, stood out prominent, and was highly praised by the spectators.

Barrister at this Exhibition has proved himself a most valuable stock horse. He was awarded first prize in his class without much deliberation. Mr. McRae’s Brown Stout, another most valuable stock herse, second, and a fine stallion owned by Alex. Smith, of Margate, named Victor Hugo, third. The competition in cart colts under two and three years was not large, but the stock shown was excellent. In cart mares with foal, the competition was large and the show magnificent. For a time the judges seemed unable to make choice, but they gradually, and with difficulty, weeded them out until a juliciousand final decision

was given. Mr. Robert Glover, of Sum- merside, was awarded first prize for his * Dexter mare with Barrister foal. Mr. John Holmes, of Winsloe Road, received second for his Stockman mare with Barrister foal, and Mr. William Carey was awarded _ third

for his Champion Mare with Barrister foal. The Cart Fiileys, under two and three years old, were very choice but not numer- ous. Cart Foals. however, brought forth a sharp contest, and three of Barrister’s get were successful,—Mr. William Carey’s tak- ing first, Mr. John Horne’s second and Mr Robert Glover's third. These three were also awarded the prizes for best foal, sired by Barrister.

CATTLE.

The exhibit of cattle was altogether suc- cessful; though in some classes the com- tition was small. Thoroughbred Short- orns were scarce in most classes, but the animals shown were superior. Ayrshires too were not numerous, but like the Short- hornes were of extra good quality. In es Shorthornes and Grades (not Short- orne) the show was large and competition uite sharp. Many fine animals were shown in this last class. Among the chief exhibitors of cattle were Mr. John Dewar, Lot 48, who exhibited in most every class, and secured a number of handsome _ prizes. Blake Brog., who always have a handsome exhibit, Mr. George Tweedy, who showed two handsome yearling heifers weighing 942 lbs. and 770 res- pectively, and one of which secured first = in its class, Henry Longworth, Esq., *. L. Haszard, Bellview, and Louis Jenkins, Upton. The Stock Farm stock on the ground looked well. The fat cow which weighed 1,675 lbs.—one hundred and fifty pounds heavier than the heaviest at the Dominion, _ among the attractions of the Cattle ow.

SHEEP.

The exhibit of sheep was large. All classes were weil represented. {Better sheep than those shown have beea seen on exhibition here, but we never saw a better average exhibit. In ram lambs of all breeds the show was particularly large, and extra good—Leceister and Shropshires appearing in equal numbers. In the Leicester ram amb, Albert Boswall, who had a splendid

were to be found among them. The show of boars and sows was small, but superior. In the latter class Mr. John Court and Patrick Berrigan, Royalty, were prize takers.

POULTRY.

The show of poultry was not so good as expected. There was not a large variety nor a large exhibit. Some very good Ply- mouth Rocks, Leghorns, Hamburgs, and Brahmas, were to be seen however; and there was a good show of ducks, and a fine lot of common geese. Vhe prizes for Toulouse Geese were not awarded, owing to a dispute regarding purity of the breed of those shown.

IRAIN.

4 Of grains and grass seeds there were about fifty samples; and taken for all in all they were the best ever shown on the Island, or perhaps in the Maritime Prov- inces. Good judges say the samples are, if anything superior to those forwarded from the Island to St. John. Messrs. Bulman, of Rustico, Charles Pippy, Lot 48, Daniel MeNeill, Lot 49, B. Cole, Bedeque, Peter Murphy, Portage, J. G. Hughes, Covehead, John Dewar, Lot 48, Wallace McKenzie, Lot 48, and Leonard Wood, Lot 48, were among our exhibitors. Mr. Joseph Haslam exhibited a bag of wheat much admired by judges. BUTTER AND CHEESE:

There are on exhibition seventy packages of butter. It is generally admitted that the quality of the butter exhibit is better than it has been in past years. Among the exhibitors in this class apart from prize winners, are Mrs. Wm. Prowse, Royalty;

Buraett, Mrs. Henry Chowan, Mrs. E. Chowan, Mrs. John McKinlay, Mrs. E. Lewis, Mrs. Forbes, Mrs. E. Lane, and Mrs. Donald Ferguson. To judge which of the different samples were entitled to prizes was a work of much difficulty; and it was not without some reason for it,that some of the exhibitors, who didn’t get prizes, con- tinue to think their butter better than that of those who obtained the prizes.

THE MILL VIEW CREAMERY

exhibit was a very fine one in both butter and cheese. Mr. Bourke is to be congratu- iated on his success at the exhibitions; and we trust the financial returns from the creamery will be handsome. All the cheese factories on the Island were well represent- ed. Though all could not, of course, get prizes, the quality of the cheeese exhibited by all was very good—as good, perhaps, as could be produced in Canada. ROOTS AND VEGETABLES.

While the exhibits in this department were perhaps fewer in number than in former years, they were never better in quality.

MR. E. BAYFIELD'S exhibit consists of eleven varieties of garden and farm produce. His mangolds are perhaps, the finest ever shown in this Province—finer than any shown in St. John, not excepting those which came from the Bull’s Eye of the Dominion. His cucumbers, beets, etc., are also splendid of their kind; and the flowers very hand- some.

exhibits varieties of Indian corn, carrots, Swede turnips and flax seed—al! excellent of their kind.

MR. JOHN DEWAR

exhibits white oats, peas, red clover seed, Swede turnips, mangolds, carrots, beets, melons, ete. —a very good exhibit,

MR. JAMES HOWARD, JR., is an exhibitor of prize potatoes; he also shows an excellent sample of white wheat, and another equally good of its kind of Swede turnips. His good wife contributes three fine cheese.

MR, FRANCIS DUMONT,

of Charlottetown Royalty, exhibits table

—a nice collection. MR. FREELAND exhibits some choice varieties of roots and vegetables, and is the winner of several prizes. ‘ MR, THOMAS RIDGEWAY

shows a representation of the flowers pro- duced in his conservatory. There are three varieties of double petunias and three varieties of fuchias-—all very fine ; a beauti- ful hand boquet and alsoa table boquet. GOVERNMENT HOUSE

makes a fine exhibit of roots and vegetables, consisting of long red mapgolds, white field carrots, shorthorn carrots, red onions, table beets, parsnips, danvers, celery, etc., show- ing careful and successful culture.

MR. JAMES BOURKE exhibits a collection of vegetables in cab- bages melons, tomatoes, squashes, etc., well worthy of his reputation as one of our leading market gardeners.

MR. RICHARD BOURKE exhibits mangolds, carrots, onions, beets, etc., in variety; and Mr. Angus McKinnon shows a large collection of splendid vege- tables.

MR. GEORGE TWEEDY shows several baskets of very fine potatoes; and is one of the successful exhibitors.

ARTISTIC AND FANCY WORK.

MISS BOURKE’S collection of pictures is very. nice indeed. Her bunch of mayflowers is admirable; and but one of the seven pieces she exhibits is at all unworthy of any amatear artist.

MISS B. BE. WRIGHT'S

contribution to the art department is also a good one, and the works of Miss Mc- Farlane, Miss Mattie McNeill, Miss Katie McLean, and other amateurs, make. a very creditable exhibit.

MR. €. LEWIS

is the only photographer exhibiting. He shows a well finished collection which is

greatly admired.

Mr. Haszard is the winner of seventeen prizes; and certainly deserves great credit for his efforts in the field of horticulture.

The Engineers’ annual company shooting match came off at Kensington Range on Tues- day last. The medal presented by Lieut. Mc- Dougall was won by Sapper D. L. Hooper, with a score of sixty-five points out of a pos- sible seventy-five. Five shots were allowed at each range, viz.:—-200 yards, 400 yards and £00 yards. At the 200 yards the position ;for firing was standing, at the 4C0 yards kneeling. No sighting shots,

At Cow River, on the 3rd inst., John Me- Donald, foimeriy of Bun enell, in the 48th year of his age Kind ard corteous in his nature he won the respect of all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

At St. Peter’s Bay, on September 14th, passed away from the shadows of earth tothe glorious sunshine of Heaven, William Di well, of Charlottetown, in the 54th year of his age. His kindness, generosity and hospi- tality, endeared him to a large circle of friends. He was an affectionate husband, kind father and good neighbor, and he died expressing his confidence in the merits of his Saviour. His funeral was attended by an unusually large concoufse of people who enter- tain the highest respect for his memory.
