Hockey on a three-game win streak

The second half of the season has brought out a different side of the Panther hockey team. Its record improved to 5-14- 3, with three wins in the past week.

Freshman Brandon Coalter attributed the team’s recent success to “{a] better distribution of talent on different lines. The guys are playing better together and [the] bounces are finally going our way.”

Last Wednesday UPEI traveled to New Brunswick and beat Moncton 5-2. Doug Clarke scored two goals. Mark Lynk, Ryan Power and Andrew Morrison scored one each.

The weekend brought the St. Thomas

University Tommies to Charlottetown. Saturday the Tommies opened by scoring within seconds gone in the first period. Lynk, assisted by Morrison and Scott Cameron, résponded quickly with the first

Walsh started off the scoring 50 seconds into the second period, assisted by Dylan Taylor and Aaron McInnis. The Tommies re- sponded with a power play goal, then followed it up several minutes later with an even-strength score. With eight minutes left in the second period, first-year Ryan Power

scored an unassisted goal for the Panthers.

Almost a minute later on a power play, Lynk scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Cameron and Morrison.

The third period was quiet, as far as goal- scoring was concerned.

Cameron and Lynk. Liam MacEachern, , scored the last Panther goal in the third period. St. Thomas finished its scoring with 3:50 left in the game.

“The goal tending and forechecking were strong (in these two games). We had a couple of let downs in the second periods,” Coalter said. “Overall, we’ve played the best we’ ve played all year.”

The hockey season is coming to aclose, buta few games still remain to

be played. The Panther still have a chance to make something decent out of this year. Next weekend they travel to Nova Scotia to take on Dalhousie and Acadia. Their last three

regular season games will be played at home. Feb. 8 is arescheduled game against St. FX. The weekend of Feb. 12-13, the team will play St. Thomas and the University of New Brunswick. Feb. 18 is the quarter final game of the playoffs against St. Thomas.

“We should win against Dal and Acadia. Going into the playoffs ona winning streak rather than a losing streak would be good,” Coalter said. “Playing against St. Thomas will be tough, but with two wins we should have momentum.”
