A special despatch frem Hong Kong to the Imparcial says that the commander of the British gunboat Redpole has tele graphed from Manilla that the gravity of the situation at the capital of the Phillip- pine Islands is such as to oblige him to remain there with his ship. . This message indicates that the position at Manilla is very serious, though no details are obtain- able owing to the rigor of the censorship. Business telegrams have been received at Hong Kong from mereantile correspond ents at Manilla advising against the sbip- ments of further consignments of goods to the Phillippines, and stating that business there is at 4 complete standstill.

Professor Stowe, the husband of Har- riet Beecher Stowe, often said that he saw visions of people in whom he was interest- ed, and Mrs. Field recalls an instance of this in the Review of Keviews.
