Jon and Vangelis

Though the name is. unfamiliar, I find that Jon and vangelis is a Mike Oldfield - type .who 'released two relatively obscure albums on his own (vangelis and. V , ‘Spiral ). On\his third '. l.p. (Heaven and Hell) ‘ Jen Anderson supplied vocals on a couple of tracks. The rest, as. they say, is geography. .The pair released Short Stories, which net with modest success. New, The Friends Of Mr. Cairo could be the. breakthrough. ‘

The l.p. is not overwhelming but there are a couple of songs getting some F.M. exposure which should boost the record's sales and the duo's notoriety. The opening cut, "The Friends of Mr. Cairo", is a gen.’ It opens with machine gun‘fire and .Grade — B gangster -movie dialogue. This leads into a slick, driving beat , and' before you know it you are in the midst of

one of the most interesting‘

(neaning good) songs of the year. The song is busy,

cluttered, and complex, but it works — a tribute to some pretty profess- ional arrangements. The songs that 'follow don't neasure up to the strength of ‘the title track, with the possible exception of "Mayflower". The .latter draws a clever analogy betWeen the 18th ‘centurey ship and a let century space craft. "Outside of This (Inside of That)" and A"Beside" are o.k. as far as ballads go - which normally isn't very far. Meanwhile, "Back to School" is simply formulated disco, which, if there is a God in heaven, will soon be' banned in the‘free world. It's usually unfair to compare artists but_ I can't help noting the sindlarity between JOn and vangelis and the Alan Parsons Project, especially in the ballads (though I can't picture Parsons haﬁdling "The Friends of Cairo"), Chances Are - Bob Mar—W aw — This is a collection of previously unreleased»

judging from the

tendency of most~reoord companies to feed.off

the tragedy of its dead

'v chattels you can bet it

won't be the last.

For his fans thiS' l.p. will be a must, as the late Marley (he died from a brain tumor last

'year - age 29)was the

unquestioned king of reggae and an institution in Jamacia.

I must confess that I was never an awestruck fan of this type of music and followed the reggae craze at a considerable distance. Yet, when listening to this l.p. it is impossible not to appreciate and admire the great talent and conviction that this man possessed. Marley sang of his vision

- of peace and prosperity

for his people. To say that his death was an injustice and that he will be missed is the supreme understaﬁement.

of the mid '70's

Canadian music scene.

Wanna Be a Star is a well balanced, sold effort

with the band's personnel and stylistic changes

'being evident.

An aspect of the album which is not terribly orginal is the intermittent theme of the seedier side of rock

yand roll; i.e. the rape and exploitation of the "star" by agents and record companies. One can't help but feel that if the band was so naive and puritanical then they wouldn't be recording in the first place, hence their real commit- ment to this theme is questionable.

_ All of this isn't particularly bothersome since the music is coed. Chilliwack have proven in the past that they can rock and now have added a touch of blues and r&b. All in all, a pretty decent album. Roccommended cuts: "My Girl"; "Walk Oh";

"(So You) wanna Be'a Star'; and "Too Many Enemies".
