It is quite clear that whatever may be the intention of the company as to taking action against Major Walsh for the re- covery of its alleged lost profits, Sir Charles Tupper must be held innocent of even a desire to profi: by the liquor traffic in the Yukon, and be credited with having stoutly, and apparently effectively, so far as his Own company goes, opposed the traffic. No one could be possibly more gratified than the Witness over Sir Charles Tupver’s stout opposition to tbe liquor trattic in the Yukon.”

It may be added by way of further expla- nation that the remarks of the Witness quoted above bave reference to a cherge which it and other papers pub- lished to the effect that Sir Charles Tup - per was indirectly interested in the intro-~ duction of liquor into the Yukou. A short time ago ex-Lieutenant-Governor Dewdney was reported to have entered a eult against Major Walsh for having stopped the importation of 3,000 gallons forwhich # permit had been granted by the Governor of the North West. It was said that the stoppage was illegal and that the Minister of Justice so pro- nounced it. Ex-~Gevernor Dewdney was connected with one cf Sir Ciarles Tup- per’s mining’companies, and it bappened that he entered his suit though the law firm of Tupper & Peters of Vancouver. It was stated as a com- ment upon this suit that Sir Charles Tup- per had desired to send liquor to the Yukon and that it was because Major Walsh had interfered to prevent the transaction that the attack upon the Yukon administration

FAR TOO GRAND.

Sirn,—The “wait till you seeus next year’ extravagance seems to have strcuk us too. The other day anew steamer,costing $20,000 at least and luxuriously fitted out with gorgeous staterooms and plush cush- ions, spank and spar, steamed into our “mudhole” with lighthouse supplies. A diegrunted Tory, with spy+glass in hand and a lighted cigar took our poor tax-rid~ den Jand in and emiled in contempt of us to the great Lord of the light house service, just despatching a favorite joint below. Just think of this Brant extravagance. It was bad enough when Tupper built a sail bout at as many hundreds as this cost thousands of dolJars to visit lighthouses? Why saddle us with such expenee? Couldn’t the few casks ot oil required for Malpec, West Point and North Cape be sbipped by rail and _ havled to the light- houses? Someone would earn an honest dollar. Couldn’t commander Lord reach us by the regular way without this extravagant ovtlay of our money to give luxurious ease to men we!! paid already and make us work and toil and foot the bills who can- not procure the ordinary uecessaries of life. 22 cents for oil which eheuld cost us 10-and Davies promised to muke that low—wh:le grain and potatoes are worth nothing. If this is retorm—the reform we worked to put the Tories out for—1 for one have been mistaken, and so have all the reformers around here.
