THE ASIATIC PLAGUE

Raging at Hong Kong—Twelve 1% housand

Deaths Reported. Late news from Hong Kong shows that the plague is increasing rather than diminishing in severity. The total for the 26th, 27th and 28th ult. were 66 new cases and 76 deaths, and there were hopes that the disease was showing signs of diminishing. On the 29th, however, 30 new cases were reported and 25 deaths; on the 30th, 33 new cases and 28 deaths; on the 3lst, 41 new cases and 48 deaths, and

on the Ist of June, 59 new cases and 54 deaths. The serious news is alo pub- lished that an officer and three soldiers

engaged in inspecting the slums have been attac ked by the plague, bat whether these belonged to the English or Indian regi- ments at Hong Kong is not stated. The imperial Chinese telegraph has communi cated the following to the Shanghai papers dated Hong Kong, 29th May, 8.40 p.m. Shauhing and Samshus districts are flocd- ed two to three feet deep, and business is stopped. The rice fields at Tung Kun and Fatshan are submerged, and the river has risen four feet two inches. Nearly 4.000 dead rats were coliected this month. The plague is decreasing in the Canton district. Latest news from Canton is to the effect that although the plague was claiming

leas victims in that city than for weeks past, yet it is causing sad havoc in towns and villages to the northward and westward. In Hong Kong from May 3lst to June 7th, 577 deathe are reported, 239 cases being under treat- ment. The total number from the out-

break to that date is abont 12,000.

On June 9th the official Gazctte an- nounced that a telegram had been received by the Foreign Department from the Nagasaki prefect to the effect that the cap- tain of the Pacific Mail steamer Pern, which arrived at Nagaeaki on the 7th inst., from Hong Kong, via Amoy, re ported to the sanitary officials at Nagasa-~ ki that one of the Chinese stokers of his ship was affected with the plague on the 4th inst., and died during the same night, his remains being at once buried at sea.

The attention of Commercial Travellers is ealied to the following sections of an Act possed by the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Isiand, Session 184, intitaled “An Act to Impo-e a Direct tax on Certain Classes of Traders” :—

i. “rom and after the passing of this Act every casual trader not permanently residing inthis Province doing business within this Province, commonly known as “ Commercial Travellers,” and every persen nol permanent- ly residing in this Provinee, and who sells either for h-mself or any other person auy go uls, wares or merchandize in th s Province, or solicits or canvasses tor orders either tor himself or any Other person >F the sale, ex- change or purchase of any goods, wares or merechandize w.thin this Province, either by the production of sampics, photographs, catas logucs, printed or written matter, or simply by word of mouth without the production ot samples, photographs, catalogues, printed or written matter, shall, before be or she enters upon the business of so selling any goods, wares or merchandize, or soliciting or can- vassing for such orders, pay tothe Provinciai Treasurer of this Province an annual license fee or direct tax of fifteen dollars.”

2 “Upon payment of the said license fee or direct tax, the said Provincial Treasurer shall grant a license authorizing the person therein named to+e'l goods, wares and mer- chandize in this Provinee, and to solicit and canvass for orders tor the sale, exchange or purchase of goods, wares and meretandize within this Provinee. Such license shall be granted and remain in foree for the of one year following the date upon which the said license shall be granved and no longer.”
