A New Wonder.
EDISON'S GREATEST INVENTION An invention that far outstrips Edison’s telephone in transmitting sound, and in simplicity and cheapness of construction, has been invented by an Indiana young man, Mr. Israel D. Jewett, assisted by his father, Mr. H. D. Jewett. The place where this invention, which has been called the agophone, came to light, is a little village of one hundred inhabitants, St. Omér, which lies two miles from the rail- town of St. Paul, on the Indianapolis, Cin- cinnati and Louisville railroad, about thirty- seven miles from Indianapolis. Father and son are the proprietors of a drug store, printing office, musical instrument store, ost oflice and general repairing shops, all in the same building. The instrument they have invented is now in operation between their general utility shop and their resi- dence, a quarter of a mile away. The dif- ference between that instrument and Edison’s telephone is, that it does not have to be held to the mouth and shouted into by the speaker,while the listener must held his ear to the tube to hear the faint sounds. In the agophone the speaker stands ten feet away from the instrument, and his voice is heard distinctly at the other end of the line at an equal or greater distance frem the instrument. The invention was _in- spected by a reporter on Saturday, who found a group of wondering neigh- bors gathered to hear and see the great invention. A conversation was in progress between the elder Jewett, in the store, and his wife at their residence. Mr. Jewett was leaning on the counter, three or four feet away from the little box, which was the instrument. He spoke in a natu- ral, easy tone, not especially directing his voice te the instrument. The answers came back with such distinctness that they were understood equally well in the further cor- ner of the store as at the mouth of the in- strument. Mrs. Jewett was asked to sing, and the words of ‘‘ Over There” came with ali the sweetness that would have been heard if the singer had been in an adjoin- ing room. Mr. Jewett went home and, at the request of his son, took a seat eight feet from the instrument and played the ‘* Arkansas ‘Traveller’ en his violin. Every note was heard distinctly, not only in the store, but on the street and in the rear yard, which is separated by another room from the store. The closing of a door, sweep- ing the floor, footsteps and conversation be- tween Mrs. Jewett and others in her room, all were heard-in the drug stere. The ticking of a watch placed in the instrument was heard at the other end ef the line. The inventor is reticient about the principles ef his instruinent. It has no battery and no magnet unless there is a magnet most artfully concealed. All that can be seen of the agophone is a little box, open in front, with black walnut sides, the back of thin iron plate. About an inch in front of the iron plate is a thin pine board forming a artition across the box. It has an open- ing about an inch in diameter, from which asmall funnel of thin copper plate runs back through the iron end of the box, clos- ing on a smal! brass wire. The brass wire extends out about two yards, and connects with copper wire, which forms the con- nectisg medium. The instrument at the other end is the same. Mr Jewett does not offer any explanation of his principle, except to say that the copper funnel is a vibrator. He is exceedingly anxious not to tell too much before the end is attained.
