Jomx McKay, of Stanley Bridge, received a telegram on last Tuesday from the Department of Marine, asking him to accept & position as waster m the fisheries protection service of the Dominion. We are sorry to learn that Capt. McKay is con- fined to his howse and consequently is unable to accept the offer. We feel that no man is better able to perform the duties of such a position than Capt: McKay huis jong experience in the coasting trade 1 these provinces, and his general ability as pilot entitle his judgement to great respect in this business. Washed Overboard and Drowned.

A cable from Havre announces that Hon. Wm. McDougall, ex-M. P. P. for Hants, was washed overboard from his barque Salmon in mid-ocean and drowned. The deceased was going over to Europe in the splendid new ship he had recently built.
A Yacht and Crew Missing. Campen, N. Y., May 26.
Three brothers named Wright and James Harris started out in their yacht Saturday for a sail and have not since been heard from. It is supposed all were lost.
A Royal Betrothal.

A Costly Drunken Slumber.
A drunken farmer drove his team imto the cattle guard, on the Grand Trunk Rail- way, near Brantford, Ont., on the night of the 25th and lay down on the roadside and went tosleep. A freight train came along about 11 o’clock, cut the horses to pieces and was thrown from the track. The engine rolling down the embankment, and lies | upside down, badly smashed with thetender on top. The first car ran down over the embankment and got into a position which prevented the rest of the train from follow- ing. ‘The train hands escaped by jumping, The loss is heavy, as all the cars and con- tents were more or less injured.
