In one of the first of the Series of new kitchens built in the show houses of town the provisicn for air is admir- ible. The windows are screened by wrought iron gratings. Inside these windows are filled with shelving panes of glass, which may be adjusted to freely admit air, yet which prevents the -urious outsiders from seeing what the inmates are to have for dinner. An- other provision prevents them from smelling the dishes. The range is bullt In the remote corner of the room near the main ventilating shaft. The large hood over the range connects with this, and gathering all the steam and odours passes them through and 2ut of the house without losing a sin- gle smell.

Here the chef moves with a cherry table at his back, on one side the pot closet, in which his copper treas- ures are kept; on the other his Gresser. This dresser has no other back than the enamelled tiles that cover the walls. This is a consideration in a city oversupplied with Croton bugs, which prefer to colonise in the seams of iressers that they pry open for that purpose. The floor is laid in grey and white encaustic tiles, and the walls are lined with cream enamelled tiles. Th cleaning of the kitchen is done with a hose.

The kitchen In the grey Vanderbilt thateau is a thing of beauty. The floor Is of marble, the tables, tke sinks, the shelves and the things rarely moved are of marble. The walls are lined with cream-enameiied tiles, and all the anghes are bound with brass. Where these meet the doors and windows thy are covered with metal mouldings, thus dispensing with the wooden

trim. The ceiling is of white enamelld tiles laid in cement, and each tile 1s secured by a metal bolt. Over the

large double range is a serai-circular hood enriched with embosed copper or- naments, and swung from iron bars wrought in spiral foliations.

The cooking utensils are In keeping with this splendor. They are of cop- per, with wrought-fron handles, many of there ornamented; some of them Rave been copied from special pieces in the Cluny end other museums, Leading from the kitchen to the but- ler’s pantry above is a spiral stairway inclosed in a glass to shut out pos- sible odour and yet retain the light. This has been done so successfully that, although the butler’s pantry is directly above the kitchen, nothing dis- agreeabie makes its way aloft,

These are for ice, meat, vegetables and ®°ggs, and are built in three sections of hollow masonry, that they may be kept free from damp, and to insure perfect ventilation. The heavier arti- cles, such as ice and meat, are let in through the sidewalk with derrick and hoist. Another feature of the kitchen should be alluded to. This is the drain and hose outlet in the centre of the marble floor, for it is with the hose that the kitchen is kept clean.

The kitchens in some of the anart- ment hovses are beautiful Indeed. These are smai:, but calculated to a nicety. In fact, except when there is a large staff of servants, it is a mistake to have a large kitchen. It wastes time and taxes the strength of the cook to cover more sp*ce than is necessary. As these kitchens are placed in the least desirable parts of the house, every care is tcken to give them a!l the light and air possible The tiles, sometimes made gayer with tiles of pink and blue. The sinks are porcelain-lined, and the faucets silver plated. The cupboards and dressers are in light natural woods, and the glass unspot- te@. The cook feels that ghe is a precious thing enclosed in a jewel box and one may hope that she strives to live up to the situation.—New York Tribune,

A Chicago man has invented a steel- spring tire, which he believes will succeed the pneumatic tire.

A Westerley, R. I., bicyclist named J. E. Piper has perfected a sprocket combi- nation by which he has geared a bicycle up to 120, or seven points higher than that perfected in France not long ago, which held the record for high gearing. Piper ia riding this wheel daily. There are 20 teeth in the front sprocket and 7 in the back. The front sproket wheel is 11 inches in giameter.

{A Reign of Terror on the Congo

Loypow, Oct. 14.—An interview is pub- lished with an un-named missionary who has spent fourteen yeare on the Congo, aud who has just returned to England. He describes the reign of of terror that pre- vails there, provoked by {a dangerous re- bellion on the upper Congo. The valley, he says, has been desolated by the tyranny and exactions of the officials, whose sole aim is to raise revenue. If the natives re- sist the extortionate demands that are made upon them expeditions are sent to burn their villages aud slaughter the in- habitante. Incredible cruelties are prac- ticed by the officiale.

— Mail and Empire: “Mr. Longley, the Attorney-General of Nova Scotia, has taken Sir Richard Certwright’s place as the heavy financial gun in the expedition Mr. Laurier is now conducting through Ontario. The Nova Scotian statesman has participated prominently in the affairs of his own province. When the adminis- tration of which he is a member was formed, Neva Scotia had an expenditure of $572,000. Now the figure is $822,000. The debt was nominal; in 1882 it stood at $98,713. By 1893 it had reached $3,142,- 922. Had our Dominion debt grown in the same ratio, it would be in the neigh- berhood of nine thousand millions by this time.

The amount of Canadian inland revenue accrued during September was $657525, which is $24,092 lees than the same menth last year.

The brutal Spanish government has giv- en $25,000 to the relief of the sufferers by the floods i> Cuba and there does not seem to be much of a protest.

Owing toenormous catches of halibut in British Columbian waters by Ameri- can fishermen, the government is being urged to take incasures to protect their fisheries,

Advices from Renfrew intimate that all the butter in storage at the creamery there has been secured by a Montrealer for ship} ment to England. The exporter personally inspected the butter at the creamery, and declared it to be as fine as anything ever produced in Canada. His purchase reached $7,000.

Premier Greenway’s estimate of Manito- ba’s wheat crop, as given by the Winnipeg Free Presse, is 35,000,000 bushele: of which 20,000,000 bushels is of excelieat quality, 10,000,000 bushels of lower, but sti]! mer- chantable, grades, and 5,000,000 bushels of feed wheat. This calculation exceeds by five or six millions the estimate of the de- partmental bulletin.
