Hockey Panthers Make Playoffs

The UPEI Hockey Panthers claimed fifth spot in the overall AUS standings, despite losing two of their last three regular season games. Two of the games went into overtime, which assured UPEI a point in the standings.

Last Friday night at the Civic Centre, the Panthers played host to the Moncton Blue Eagles. It was a lack-lus- ter performance by both teams, with the first goals coming late in the third peri- od.

Brian Passmore opened the scoring at 12:57 with his tenth goal of the season, with assists by Joel Ward and Cleon Smith on a UPEI power- play. Jean-Benoit Descamps responded for the Blue Eagles, with 1:24 left in the period to force overtime.

In the extra frame, Joel Ward gathered up the loose puck and deposit- ed it behind the Moncton goalie at 3:42 to give the Panthers the 2-1 victory.

On Saturday, the Panthers played their final regular season home game against the St. Thomas Tommies, which resulted in an 8-7 loss in over- time. With the single point and a 1-0 overtime loss by St. FX to SMU, the Panthers could not be caught by the X-

The Panthers fought hard to come back in Saturday’s game, and sent it to overtime. At one point, they were down 7-3. Then they scored four unan- swered goals in the final fifteen min- utes, before losing in the extra period on a goal by’ Tommies defenceman Darryl Knight on the power-play.

On Sunday in Fredericton, in a meaningless. game, the Tommies defeated the Panthers 5-4 in overtime for the second straight game to end the regular season. Edan Welch scored the winner 3:47 into overtime for the Tommies, who finished last in the AUS hockey standings eliminating them from the post season.

The Panthers begin their play- off run this Wednesday against the UNB Varsity Reds in a best-of-three quarter-final. Game one will be played at the Civic Centre at 7:00 pm, with game two at the Aitken Centre Saturday night. Game three will also be at UNB, if necessary. The Panthers finished fourth in the standings, and will have home-rink advantage.
