Appxess.—Mr. John Corcoran, an efficieat officer of Division No. 1, A.O. H., was last evening presented with a complimentary ad dress on behalf of the officers and members, testifying to the regard with which he had been held by the Division, and wishing him success in the neighboring Kepublic. Mr. Corcoran made an appropriate reply.

Pouce Court.—This torenoon Wallace Rice, arrested on complaint of his wife for assault and battery, was discharged on his own recognizsnce to appear whenever the prosecut rix showed up; and William Pearon, for breaking and entering the ecunting house of Augustus Down in Sep- tember last, was released on his own recog nizance to appear for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court.

Ix Distress.—An exchange says: Brigt. Aquila, Sencabough, at Boston from Naguabo, P. R., reports made the run in 1] days up to sighting land April 10, n. lat. 34, the vessel was discovered to be leaking, and it was decided to make for tne nearest port. The crew have been 8 days pumping the vessel, bat she still leaks 900 strokes per hour not withstanding. ‘The Aqaila was bound to Providence, R. I., for orders. He cargo will be discharged to find the leak, after which she will probably go oa the railway for repairs.

A Pecvtran Accipext.—The Summerside Pioneer says; Mrs. Kenneth McLeod, ot Park Corner, an old lady 83 years of age, and aunt of Mr. Neil Mackelvie, of this towa, met with a pecuiiar and severe accident on Friday, the 14h inst. She resides with her son, Capt George McLeod, and as she was walking through the kitchen she tottered and fell upon the leg of achair. This wes an old fashioned chair of the kind, the back legs of which ex- tend up behind the back piece to a sharp edge. The under part of Mrs. McLeod's chin came ia contact with this sharp edge, with the re- sult that the leg of the chair broke through the flesh into her mouth.

Fatat Accrpent.—Mr. William Wedlock, who has been living nearly three years in bos- ton, returned to the Isiand via Pictou last week with the body of his dead wife, having left on Sunday morning, the 16th. The de- ceased was only married about three years and leaves two small children, the youngest, only four months old, having been left in Boston. She was a daughter of Mr. John Dyment, . of O'Leary Station. Mrs. Wedlock was cooking the dinner, and as she was frying beefsteak her clothing caught fire. She screamed and the women living in the other part of the double tenement house immediately ran to her assistance and threw a mat around her, but the fire was not put out. After being taken the hospital she lingered in excruciating pain for eight hours and then expired. Mr. Wed- lock with his little boy and the corpse passed

Fins at Sovrits.—About 8 o'clock last evening the alarm was sounded for a fire in a house on Main Street, owned by the Knight estate and oceupied by L. E. Shaw, Esq., jeweler, as a store and dwelling house, and also by J. i. Hooper, Esq., as adwelling house. The fire originated in Mr. Shaw’s end, and in fewer minutes than it takes to tel] it, his half of the house was in flames, and all efforts to secure either his jewelry or household furniture proved futile. Mr. Hooper was a shade more successful, He recovered a portion of his furniture, but still was unable to secure some of the most valuable articles. This was a new house, having been completed scarcely a year ago It was re-built on the site which was rendered vacant by fire avout two years ago in connection with the Connolly estate property. This fire goes to impress more clearly than ever the necessity of a full equipped fire apparatus in Souris, there being nothing at all in the shepe of appa- ratus for putting out a Gre, and if it all starts it cannot be extinguished till the building has been demolished. Luckily there was no wind, and this prevented the destruction of the adjoining buildings, which however were only saved by hard work on the part of the villagers. It 1s re- ported that the loss is covered by insur- ance.

A Correction.

Sirk,—I am not concerned to defend the anti-Roman crusade ef the Guardian, nor am 1 in sympathy therewith, for our obvious duty in the present day is to pro- mote unity among Christians of various nodies rather than discord. But in his remarks anent the Guardian’s article on the “Divisions of Christianity” your correspondent ‘‘Anti-Prejudice” errs in describing the Bishop Perry there spoken of as ‘‘the Ritualistic Bishop of lowa”—the (ruardian writer is referring to Bishop Perry, late of Melbourne, Australia, a well koown champion of Protestantism. ‘‘Anti- Prejudice” has, however, scored a point in his statement about Dr. Littledale, whose Writings contain the most pungent argu- ment for the anti-Roman controversialist available. Lieutenant Colonel Irving lett this morning for Halifax, to assume the duties of Deputy Adjutant General for Nova Scotia. He is followed by the hearty good wishes of the militiamen of this Province.

A report is current in official circles at Ottawa to the effect that Colonel Walker Powell, Adjutant-General, and Colonel Panet, Deputy Minister of Militia, will shortly be superannuated in pursuance of the Govern- ment’s new scheme of reorganizing the militia service.

Prof. Robertson, Dominion Dairy Com. missioner, has gone to Chicago with the object of seeing to the proper installation of the mammoth cheese and the Canadian cheese pyramid at the World’s Fair. Dr. Selwyn, a director of the Geological Survey, also left for Chicago in connection with the geological exhibit.

Mr. P. A. Hughes, formerly of Emerald, P. E.1, sonof J. W. Hughes, Esq, was escorted to the ©. P. R. depot on Thursday night, 20th inst., by his many friends. Mr. Hughes has received an important appoint- ment on the federal staff at the World's Fair, Chicago It is gratifying to know that the Province has one representative on the staff at the World’s Fair, and one on whom Island ers may call for information during the pro- gress of the great exposition.
