Your Committee regret that the Amend- meut of the Act of Incorporation prevents the leyying of an Assessment upon householders, whose rental is less than thirty dollars. The city is thus deprived of a just source of revenue ane those householders who come within the limit of the Statute, are compelled to bear the burden of inequitable taxation. Your Com- mittee recommend that the City Council, at the next session of the Legislature, ask for an extension of the power of taxation, so that a// who reside within the city limits may be taxed.

Also, the passing of a Bye-Law imposing a tax on watermen for the city, to the amount of say $10 each; also on _ Livery Stable Keepers, to the extent of $50 each.

Your Committee would further state that the Market, exclusive of City Scales—which your Committee would further recommend be also let by tender—be farmed out tothe highest bidder for the space of five years, from which soureea considerable increased revenue is con- tidently anticipated.

On motion of Councillor Stumbles, seconded by Councillor Davy, the estimates for side- walks and streets, was reduced to $1000.

On motion, the Mayor was authorized to dispose of $17,000 worth of debentures, bear- ing interest at 6 per cent., payable in ten years.

Meetinc or Central Commivrer.—A meeting of the Central Committee of King’s County for the introduction of the De- minion Act for the regulation of the traftic in spirituous liquors, was held at the Manse, Georgetown, on the 22d inst. Present, the Rey. Charles McDonald, Rey. John Mc- Kinnen, Wm. Sanderson, Esq., and A. C. Stewart. The Rev. Charles McDonaid was appointed Chairman, and the undersigned Secretary. A letter received by W. San- derson from Hon. A. A. McDonald, Chair- man Central Committee for the Province, was read, after which a verbal report was given by the Rev. Chairman of the general meeting held*at Charlottetown on the 21st inst. It was resolved that the Secretary correspond with all the temperance organ- izations in the County, requesting a delega- tion to be present from each at a meeting to be held on Monday, the 2nd day of Sep- tember next, at Georgetown, for the pur- pose of organizing a system of co-operation, and appoint committees in various localities throughout the County to receive the requis ite number of signatures for the purpose of putting the above Act into operation.

We learn that in consequence of having received a telegraphic despatch announcing the nomination of her Excellency’s second son to a naval cadetship, the Countess of Dafferin proposes to return to England next Saturday. Col. Littleton, who goes home on leave, accompanied by the Hon. Mrs. Littleton, will sail in the same ship.

George Brown went to Washington, at an expense of thousands of dollars to the people of this country, and offered the Americans concessions to the estimated vale of thirty millions of dollars if they would give Canada reciprocity of trade; therefore, the great conundrum of the cam- paign is: why did he do soif the United States tariff hurts the United States and hurts not Canada? Perhaps Sir Albert will answer this to- the satisfaction of his constituents. —Moncton Times.

The Stipendiary Magistrate remarked that he would adjourn the case until Mon- day, hoping that the witnesses, Lynch and Curran, would be in attendance. He then, in the meantime, would he glad to hear any remarks from Mr. Hodgson as_ to whether the prisoners should be remanded for murder or manslaughter.

Mr. Hodgson—There are two grounds upon which the remand should not be for murder, if you think the prisoners should be sent up for trial at all.

The Magistrate here remarked that he had no doubt that the prisoners should be sent to the Supreme Court for manslaugh- ter. His only doubt was whether it should not be for murder.

Mr. Hodgson—Assuming that your Hon- or will send the prisoners for trial, there are two reasons why they should not be sent for murder. In the first place, all the evi- dence h:s been given which can be ad- duced- As to the testimony of the missing witness; | am quite willing that his evi-

against us, and yet, notwithstanding this, even as the case now stands, would any reasonable man say that they were guilty of murder? If this Court possessed the power of conviction, would it send these

two men to the gallows? Cer- tainly not. Then, too, remember how it may — nay, most certainly will—present itself when the prisoners

case has been heard; when their counsel speak for them; when their witnesses are heard; when the witnesses for the prosecu- tion have been cross-examined, and they have availed themselves of all the means of defence which the law allows to those ac- cused of any wrong. If they cannot be held guilty of any murder now, a fortori how will they after a s'r.ct examination be charged of a crime which no reasonable man thinks has been, or can be, proved against them. Your Honor cannot but be aware that. many of the Crown witnesses, and those upon whose testimony this case will stand, are of a very indifferent character— that in fact they stand in the black book of this court charged with, and convicted of many offences. I have not gone into this matter, but the Court cannot but know it.

Mr. Hodgson addressed the Court as to the distinction between murder and man- slaughter, and quoted many authorities as to the degree of malice requisite to support the former crime, and concluded by ex- pressing a conviction that the Magistrate

The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘‘ EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” ‘“*‘SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” etc., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coal as SY DNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such means are only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the staNDARD character of SYDNEY COAL.
