Lonvoy, Jan. 16,.—It is announced advices have been there from Colesburg, dated Friday, January 12, saying that Colonel Porter with his mounted New Zealanders and New South Wales Lancers is plackily worrying the Boers from kopje to koyje by hazardous moves,

The Colonials, it ig added, are com pletely nonpluseing the burghers.

A party of Remingtons’ scouts having eluded the Boer pickets entered Norval’s-

Lonpon, Jan. 16.—The Standard gives prominence to the following despatch dated Saturday, January 13th, from Dar- ban: “ A man who just arsived from Springfield says that the British columas proce ding to the relief of Ladysmith had crossed the Little Tugela when he left it, aad was facing the Boer positicn on the Big Tugela, and howitzers were shelling their trenches.

He aays that 250 wagons, laden with commissariate stores for Ladysmith had left Frere and that it was expected the eolumn would join hands with Genera White on Monday eveniag.

The traction engines bave been doing excellent work, hauling the heavy wagons out of holes and swamps.

The British patrols have discovered parties of Boers in the direction of Enner- steat between Frere ard Escourt.”

Loxpox, Jan. 16.—The Standard pub- lishes the following from Ladysmith :— *“ Thursday, January 11, by heliograph via Weenan. The Boers are fortifying positions north-west of Ladysmith ; doubt- je38 with # view of securing @ safe line of ret;cat, should their opp sition to General Buller’s advance fail.

RUMORS IN LONDON

Lonpoxs, Jan. 16.—The belief that battle is progressing at ihree points on the Tugela has stirred London to a high piteh of excitement.

But as yet there is no foundation for the reports, which seem te be born of the fer- vent hopes of the people. Crowds are constantly gathering at the War Office. But no news is given out yet. Concera- ing the Britieh formation it is now clear that General Buller with fifteen thousand men is twenty miles west of Colenso at Potgieter’s Drift and that General Warren with ten. .Jousaud men is twenty miles East of Colenso and has crossed the Tuzela beyond Weensn while General Clery with five thousand men now holds ¢ the Boer front at Colenso.

This disporitior of the forces against the Boers makes practically neceseary*the same division among the Beers even though the Boer ferces are mobile.

| The twenty miles of entrenchments from Coleneco are rendered worthless by thie far-reaching flanking mevement of the Buitish.

BOERS DRAWING AWAY.

LapysMira, Jan 16.—A sortie to the south of the town, shows that the Boers have abandoned Groebler’s Kloof and other positions in that direction.

Groeblers was a particularly strong position.

GENERAL WARREN’S POSITION,

Care Town, Jan. 11.—A despatch to the Argus of this city, dated Friday last says: The authorities have recsived the news that General Warren has eccupied a strong position north of the Tugela river, but the report is discredited in official ircles.

Lonpon, Jan, 13.—The Daily Telegraph has the following despatch dated January 9th from Frere camp: “A heavy storm has been raging all night and there is every prospect that it willcontiaue, The roads are impassable and the rivers end spruits are full, There has been no fight- ing at Ladyemith or Coleseo Their trenches must be filled with water. The Boers are holdiag Mount Plangwano, bri they are certainly quite isolated os their bridge over the Tugela must have been carried away.”

Suicide *

Recixa, N. W.T., Jan. 15.—Corporal Lindsay, of the North West Mounted Pelice, came from Battleford to join the Western contingent his father and brother were both killed in the first Boer war, and he was anxious to avenge their deaths. Unfortunately he could not pass the doc- tor’ examination. Despondency came over him, and he ylaced a pistol in his mouth and shot himeelf dead.

More Mules.

New Orveane, La, Jav.15.—The Iona, Corinthian and Kildona, Britisb transports, which took out cargoes of mules to South Africa, have returned for more, which they have begun to load. The Corinthian took out 1.180 mules and lost 80, and the Jona only Jost 11. The Kildona had a eatisfac- ory trip.
