Prior to the Crimean War, the pro motion of a general officer for distin vuished service in the field was almost unknown in our army, the Dake of | Wellington furnishing one of the very | faw instances on record. The war with | Rassia, which gave Lord Ralgan a field marshai’s baton within a few months of his death, gained Sir John Burgoyne, Sir George Beown,and Sir James Simp son their general’s lance, won promo- tion to Lieut-Gren. for such men as Sir Colin Campbell and Sir William Cod- riagton, and gained special advane« ment to the Major-General’s list for Sir kkichard Airey, Lord Strathnairn, Sear- lett, Sir Harry Jones, Buller, Eyre, Dacres, Windham, Fenwick-Williams and Dupuis, A fresh batch of special} service promotions to the general's list appeared betore the Indian mutiny had bven completely sappresved, Sir Hugh Rose, by reason ef his Central Lndian service, being again advanced out of his reguiar turn ; with Sir Joha [nglis, Sir James Hope Grant, Sir William Mans- tield, Sir Edward Lugard, Sir Thomas Franks aod Sir Henry Havelock were all promoted Major Generals tor dis- tinguished services.” The precedents thus established were not added to until Lord Wolseley gained his Major General’s lance in April, 1874, for Ashantee service. We have since then had six farther instances of exceptional promotion in Sir Evelyn Wood, gazet- ed major-general for South-Africa ser- vice in August, 1881; in Lord Wolseley promoted general Sir Archibald Alisoo, lieutenant-gereral ; and the Hon. James Dormer, major-general for the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 ; Sir Redvers Buller, major-geseral for the Soudan campaign of IS84:andSir Herbert Stewart, for lis reeent suceess in what is apparently only the opesiag scene ina lengthy series of operations. —Army and Navy

Sawed off His Head.
DECAPITATION OF THE BODY OF A MAN CONCEALED IN A HOLLOW LOG.
The following singular story comes from Gallion, Ohio. The residents of Liberty Township have atopic of ab- sorbing interest for neighborhood dis cussion in adiscovery made by a couple of wood-sawyers. The men were con- verting a hollow tree into fire-wood. After one of the “‘cuts” had been sawed through well to the ground they were horrified to see a man’s head roll out, The saw had severed the man’s head from the shoulders, which could be seen in the hollow of the log. Procuring wedges they split the log open anddrew the headless body out upon the snow. In the pockets ot the dead man was found $800 in money, a pair ot revol- vere, and a number of tools such a6 mizht be used by a burglar. The theory is that the mao was a thief,who imagin- ed himself closely pursued and crawled into the hollow tree for rest and sleep. As to what caused his death there is no means of determination.

The Effect of Music
The effect of music on the senses was wooderfully verified during the mourniog for the Dake of Cumberland, uncle of George III. A tailor had a vreat oumber of black suits which were to be finished in a very short space of time. Among his workmen there was a fellow who was always singing “Rule Britannia,” and the rest of the country- men joined in the chorus. The tailor made his observations and found that the slow time of the tune fretarded the work. In consequence be engaged a blind fiddler, and placing him near the workshop made him play constantly the lively tune of “Nancy Dawson.” The design had the desired effect, the tailors’ elbows moved obediently to the me'ody, and the clothes were sent home in ample time.
