The neteworthy inerease in the traffic and in the profits of the Great Western and Grand Trunk Railways has been followed by a corresponding improvement in the cur- rent value of their stocks. Twelve months wgo the ordinary stock of the Grand Trunk, nominal value £100, could be bought in London at from £6 7s. 6d. to £16 123 6d., and the first preferences at from £39 to

Railwiy Worid, of Philadelphia, considers that : —** While various influences have con- | tributed to this revival of prosperity, its main cause is an increase in the actual and prospective amount of the inter-state cominerce of this country transacted on these lines, and an improvement in the rates appertaining to this traffic.”

Not satisiied with the already large Gov- ernment Deposit of $76,246, the directors of the Mutual Life Association of Canada have supplemented this sum with an amouit sutlicient te increase the deposit te over $40,000, thus giving the policy holders security to the extent of nearly 80 per cent of their claims. The assurance of the di- rectors, that they will continue to add’ to this fund until it reaches an amount equal to all policies in force, cannot fail to command the fullest approval of present and intending assurers. The securities, that constitute this gevernmental reserve, return the company a revenus of nearly 62 per cent.

An enterprising New Brunswicker, Mr. Burns, of Fredericton, is about extending his fruit-canning business this season to in- clude tomatees, corn, rhubarb, strawher- ries, raspberries, and peas, in additien to his present successful venture in ‘* perk and beans.”

He had as much business dash as political energy. In his time he had made and lost large sums ; and he must have died worth a con- siderable amount. His life was insured, in three differenr companies, for an aggregate of $60,000. The regret felt at his untimely death by large numbers of people through- out Canada, is angumented by the manner in which it was breught about.

The number of Canadian ships seld to countries during the last fiscal year was seventy two, of 19,318 tons valuec at $529,824, bringing thus say $27,47 per ton, much less than average. In 1878 there were ninety-five vessels sold whose tonnage was 35,200 tons and which brought $1,236- 145 being at the remunerative price of $35, 12 per ten measurement. The tonnage built throughout the Dominien last year amounted to 103,551 tons against 106,976 in 1878 An increase is shown by every province except Quebec and P. EK. Island, Nova Scotia built 50,975 tons against 47,- 639 tens in 1878, and New Brunswick 32,- 135 tons as compared with 26,906 in the previous year.

‘The Governor General, and his brother, Lerd Archibald Campbell, to-day, visited the Pariiament Buildings, the Chandiere Falls and lumber wills. To-morrow they drive to Chelsea Mountains, and en Thurs- day, the whole party, with the Princess Lonise, go by special train to Quebec. They will soon be joined by Prince Leo- pold.

The Supreme Court of Canada will close proceedings for this term to-morrow. The Law Society of Canada has suggested to the Court certain changes in the regulation which are fer the better convenience of the bar. .

The report of the Veterinary Department ef the Privy Council says that the Orders- in-Council enjoining the slaughter of cattle, sheep and pigs from the United States have been fully justified. In 1879 there were im- ported from America 137 cattle affected with pleuro-pneumonia, 33 sheep with foot and mouth disease, 57 sheep with scab and 974 swine of the fever.

The number of cattle infected with dis- eases, imported from the United States, largely exceeds the total number of cases of disease detected among the cattle im- ported in the same period from European countries,

The President has addressed Congress on ihe subject of the alleged Fortue Bay out- rage upon American fishermen. He asks the immediate and careful attention of Congress to the failure of accord between the two governments as to the interpreta- tion and execution of the fishery articles of the treaty of Washington.

The President concurs in the views pre- sented by the Secretary ef State as to the measures proposed to be taken by the Gov- ernment in the maintenance of the rights accorded to our fishermen by British con- cessions in the treaty, and in procuring suitable action toward securing an indem- nity for the injury which this interest has already suffered.
