Coffee and Alcohol in Brazil.

According tothe statement of the Viee-Director of the Rio Janeiro faculty of medicine, it appears that io Brazil, where great quantities of coflee are used and where ali the inhabitants take it many times a day, alcobolism is com- pletely unknown; itis further stated that theimmigrants arriviog in that country, though beset with the passion, fur alcohol, contract fittle by fitue the habits of the Brazilians, acquiring their fondness for driaking coffee and their aversion for liquors; and. as the children of these immigrants brought up with coffee from their early years never con- tract the tatal habits koown to their parents, it would seem that the number of drunkards in the couatry is in inverse ratio to the amount of coffee consumed. A South American correspondent of the Medical Times confirms the above statements, asserting that the number of cafes in the large cities of Brazil—where maltitudes of persons from the highest down to the lowest classes go in to take a cup of that delicious beverage which none but Brazilians know how to make properly —is enormous, while drinking saloons or bars are very few, aud their patrons fewer still. It the above is cor- rect, our temperance advocates might take a useful hint. Less oratory and more coffee would give better success to their efforts. The opening of a cheap coffee house alongside of every gin mill might have the eflect to dry up the liquor business,

Saved by an Albatross.

A singular story, says the Sydney Telegraph, bas been related to us by the master of the barque ‘Gladstone’ which arrived from London last Satuarday. On the 22nd of last month, while the vessel was io latitude 42 degrees south aod longitude 90 degrees east, a seaman fell overboard from the starboard gang- way. The barque was scudding along with a rough sea and moderate wind, buton the alarmof “man overboard” beiag given she was rounded to, and the starboard life—boat was lowered,mantied by the chief officer and four men. <A search for the uafortunate man was made, but owing to the roughness of the sea he could not be discovered; but the boat steered to the spot where he was lest seen. Here they found him floating, but exhausted, clinging for dear life to the legs and wings of a huge albatross. The bird had swooped down on the man while the latter was struggl- ing with the waves and attempted to = bim with the powertul beak.

ird hovered over the seamen, prepara- tory to a finalswoop. The bird,eager for its meal, fanned its victims with its wide-spread wings, Suddenly a thought occurred to him that the huge form so close to his fuce might become his in- voluntary rescuer, Quick as thought he reached up and seized the bird, which he proceeded to strangle with all bis might. The huge creature struggled with wings and paddies to free itself. In the con- test the sailor was beaten black and blue, and cruelly lacerated, but he held his own, and slowly the bird quivered and died. The carcass floated lightly on the waves, its feathers forming a comfortable support for the exhansted mao, who had g0 narrowly escaped a lingering death, But another danger awaited him. He was not much of a swimmer, and the excitement of the extraordinary con- flict began to tell upoo him. He was faint and grew giddy. But, with one arm around the albatross’s body, under the wing,and one hand clatchiug the bird’s feet, the sailor awaited his chance of rescue. Presently he heard bis comrades shout from the boat, and in afew minutes more was safe on board the barque, though a good deal shaken and exhausted
