Mr. Balfour's Speech.

Lonpox, Nov. 29.—Arthur J. Balfour, the government leader of the House of Commons, addressing the natiooal con. servative conference at Dewsbury yester~ day, replied to the charge that the govern- ment’s motive in the war in South Africa was the acquisition of the gold fields.

“Thave vow come to the cenclusion,” he said, “that declaration of war by the Tranevall and the Free State was pot = any despairing etruggle for liberty but @ bold bid for empire, a bid to make themselves the nucleus of a Dutch- speaking paramount power in South Africa and to exclude for ever the hated Britisher from a dominating influence from that part of the world.

* These people have risked their all up on the stake of war, and it is incredible that such a risk could be run merely to prevent the Uitlander getting a vote.

“Their dreem may be madness, but it is intelligent madness wen we consider the whole situation aud the military difficulties that beeet Great Britain in a South African campaigo.

“* They have also vainly counted upon the British party system.

** Another reason may be found in their profound contempt for British arms.”

President McKinley has appointed Rev D. McKinoon, late Chaplain of the First California Volunteers, Chap/ais in the Regular Army. Chaplain McKinnon bas been chosen by Archibishop Chapple tv work with him in the Philippines to- ward the pacification of tbe insurrection and the settlement’ of various church pro~ perty questions which have arisen. Yesterday Rev. D. J. G. McDonald, P P, Sammerside, got a wire from New York saying his brother, Dr. A D Mex Donald, of North Dakota, was dying there Father Gregory bas gone on to take home the remains. Dr. McDonald is quite a young mau, and graduated from New York University four or five years ago where he was acla-smate of Dr. Murphy, of Tig- nisb, and the late Dr. Burke, of Boston. He came to New York a few days ago tor medical treatment under Dr. Porter, and rapidly sunk after his arrival. We deeply sympathise with his numerons friends,

The Reverend Mother Provincial and ber companion, Rev. Motber St. Celestine, of the congregation of St. Joseph, who have been here for some weeks, left yes- terday morning for their home in St Paul, Minn, with eighteen young lady postuilants io their order. Five of theee came trom Alberton and four from Mount Carmel, the others being from all over the Province. Tbere was a most touching leave-taking on board the Northumberland. Miss Mary Reid, daughter of Hon. R. B. Reid, of Alberton, is the only girl in the family, and ber parents were deeply stfected at parting with her. Rev. Fathers Burke and Arsenault were at the Loat to see them off. The distinguished sisters are delight~ ed with the Island and its people, and wil! return oext year with renewed pleasure for the numerons postulants they were un-~ able to take with them this time. Mother Provineial St. Seraphine is Archibishop Ireland’s sister and Mother Sx, Celestine his cousin.

Evwortnh Leacue.—The ficat meeting this season of the Young People’s Epworth Leegue of the Pirst Methodist Church was held last evening. Thoughtful papers dealing with the Boer aod British sides of the Transvaal war were read by Professor Jordanand Mr. H. R. Boswall, and C.l. Moore gave an _ interesting sketch of the progress of the war to date. The choir sang “Rule Britannia,’ Mr. J, R Davison taking the solo. Mr. W. A.
