The death of Sir Henry Schofield recalls an interesting episode. [a 1872 he became British Consul at Guatemala. While in charge of the Legation, the command- ant of the purte of San Jose, because a British citizen whom he had summoned before him did not appear, seized this Britisher, whore name was Magee, and caused him tobe given 200 strokes with a piece of canein public. Schofield heard of this outrage, and cabled a report of the effair to the Foreige Office. Disraeli, who was theo the British Premier, fordered the British Pacific squadron at the Covsul’s dispoea] to demand full reparation. Ad- miral Cochrane, with eix warships, came tothe port. An ultimatum was sent to the Government, allowing 24 hours for the payment of $50,000 indemnity to Magee and the salute of the British ships. The demands were complied with,Geozales, who punished Magee, was disgraced aud sentenced to five years at hard labour, and an accomplice was sentenced to two years. Schofield received the thanks of Parliament, and the Queen made him Knight Bacheler. Sir Heory is survived by bis widow aod son, Henry B. Schofield who is treasurer of the American Eagi- neering Company, and who lives in Mexico City.
