EDMONTON (CIP) — Bruce I. Rankin, commercial counsellor for Canada at Berna, says Switz- erland, despite its size, is one of Canada’s best overseas custom- ers. Canadian manufacturers are not taking advantage of the op- portunity.

Mr. Rankin, a graduate of the University of Alberta in 1941, visited Edmonton on a cross-Can ada tour to meet Canadian busi- nessmen who have export and import business with Switzerland.

In many ways, he said in an interview, S w i t z e r land might seem like a paradise to exporters harassed by the maze of currency and import controls set up by

4 other countries.

Switzerland was almost wide open for exporters. It had almost no import restrictions and no cur- rency controls.

But the country’s healthy econ- omic ‘,position also provided a catch for wouldabe exporters. The plentiful supply of foreign cur- rencies enabled the Swiss to be “very exacting customers"’who seek the best goods at the best price.

So far Canadian exporters have not exploited the market to the full, Mr. Rankin said, adding that “It takes some selling. It‘s a small market but a very choice one.” ~

The Swiss grow half of their wheat needs at home and import 80 per cent of the other half from Canada. They like the Canadian trading system and the high qual- ity of Canadian wheat.

The Swiss are large-scale in- vestors in Canada. They have a high degree of confidence in the Canadian economy, and the in- vestment flow shows no' sign of slowing.
