The fall realization of the mission- aries dream of adoriginal restoration may be seen at the Indian village ot Metlakatla, i: British Columbia, some thirty miles from the Alaska frontier. his is a mission: ary station, about which are gathered fully 1,200 Indians, who have been taught some of the mechani- cal arts. They have a saw mill, barrel factory, blacksmith shep, a large co- operative store, a charch of pretentious architecture, with organ, choir,bell and stained glass windows s, afire and mili- tary company, a two-gun battery and a brass band of thirteea pieces. The church has belfry and spire, vestibule, groined arches and pulpit carved by hand, brussels carpet in the aisles, and allthe appointments of a first-class sanctuary.
The people occupy two-story houses of uniform size, 25x50 feet, with enclos- ed flower gardess and macademized sidewalks, ten feet wide, in front of the whole ofthem. There is a large town hall or assembly-room of the same cap- acity as the church, c apable of accom- modating the whole population. It is used for councils, balls, meetings and for a drill-room. I: is warmed by three great tires placed in the center of the building, and lighted by side lamps. ‘There are but @ half dozen white people in the community. The people dress very tastefully in modern garb, and I am notsure but they have the latest fashions. Tho women weave tho cloth for allthe garments, and there are gardens which afford vegetables aud fruit io abundance. I think it is the cleanest and most orderly settlement on the continent.—Cor. [n the inetrogetio there are 101 hos- pitals, in which 1,250,000 people are relieved, and which dispenses outdoor relief to 4,000,000 annually. ‘T'wentv- five per 1,000 of the population are paupers, and are relieved ata cost of over 2,500,000 pounds sterling. it also seems that there are many more luna- tic women than men. Cabs have in- creased during the last ten years from 10,000 to over 19,000; 14,478 children were lost in London last year,
Greater London contains an area of 443,334 acres. The population for this year is given as 5,189,166, of whom 60,252 are foreigners, 49,554 Scotch, 80,778 Irish, 3,214 blind, and 1,972
deaf ani dumb. In 1884 there were 11,705 licensed public and beer houses, and 15,519 male and 9,715 females were charged with drunokennass. In the same year there were 265 porsons killed and 3,592 maimed by street accidents, and 354 suicides. There
