Alleged pepper spray incident under inves- tigation by Campus Police

UPEI Campus Police are looking into an incident at the Wave on January 5". Al Veale, of Security Services told the Cadre that a patron allegedly discharged pepper spray at one or two people. Kirk Dingwell, the manager of the Wave, confirmed that nobody was hurt in the incident.

“The matter is currently under investigation,” Mr. Veale said, adding that Security Services could not comment beyond that during the investigation.

Students have been voicing their opinions regarding the incident on the UPEI Weblog. Some students have proposed that the Wave should be restricted to only UPEI students, a policy used by some campus bars. Others argued against such a move, saying that this policy does not suit UPEI. The manager of the Wave, Kirk Dingwell, sides with the latter.

“We are a commuter school.” he said. “The majority of students live off campus.”

Mr. Dingwell said these students want to bring their friends, many who don’t go to UPEI, when they come to the bar. He argued that most of these students would not come to the Wave if their friends were not allowed.

“We aren’t like other schools where most students are living on campus and are isolated; St. FX and Acadia are like that, we are not.”

Over $232,000 awarded in Doctoral Student Awards and Grants-in-Aid

Montreal, January 11, 2005 - The Danone Institute of Canada has announced the winners of the 2004 awards presented under its Grants-in-Aid and Student Awards Programs. Every year, the Institute distributes over $232,000 in Bursaries and Grants-in-Aid to groups or individuals whose projects and involvement promote the acquisition of better food habits, especially during pregnancy, early childhood, childhood and adolescence.

“The Danone Institute cares about the health and welfare of children and parents,”’ points out Dr. Peter Jones, President of the Danone Institute of Canada and Professor at the School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, McGill University. “Research and education in nutrition are a priority for us and we are extremely proud to award Canadians who stand out in this field. Canada is a very active country in nutrition research and more than ever, the Danone Institute of Canada hopes to make a full contribution to this field.”

According to Mr. Louis Frenette, Vice-President of the Institute and President and CEO of Danone Canada, “the Institute has adopted the mission of improving Canadians’ health and welfare through better diet. The recipients of this year’s awards are helping us accomplish this mission. Whether by developing important new research, proposing new avenues in food habits or enhancing their education, these worthy recipients contribute to making Canadian nutrition research a model to follow”.

The Danone International Prize for Nutrition, created with the support of the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale de France, represents an amount of 120,000 Euros (about CAN $195,000). It is presented every two years to a researcher or a team of researchers whose work in human nutrition has made a major contribution to public health. The Danone International Award Prize for Nutrition has been modeled on the most renowned prizes in order to guarantee independence and transparency during the whole selection procedure. Therefore, a confidential Nomination College composed of several hundred international nutrition experts is consulted to nominate potential candidates. A Pre-selection Committee then examines the submissions of the candidates to compile a short list of selected candidates for submission to the Jury. The Jury, presided by the Chairman of the Organization Committee, finally selects the winner of the prize.

The 2003 Danone International Prize for Nutrition was presented to Dr. Ricardo Bressani. For over forty years,

Dr. Bressani has been committed to finding effective solutions to counteracting malnutrition in Guatemala and Central America where - according to a recent study of the Inter American Development Bank - 48% of infants and young children are malnourished. In the past several years, Dr. Bressani’s research has focused on the nutritional potential and limitations _ of various staple foods, such as cereal grains, food legumes and oil seeds, and the effects of processing on nutritional quality.
