We learn that His Excellency the Governor- General in Council has sanctioned a report from the Finance Minister to place a lone of $4,000,000 on the Canadian Market. Quick Worx.—A Souris correspondent writes:—‘‘The schooner “Alpin” cleared for Margaree on Monday morning, to buy mack- erel, She returned the following morning with one hundred barrels, which were shipped and carred for Boston the same day. ‘The mackerel were bought and shipped by the enterprising firm of Macdonald, Macdonald & Co, The same firm shipped to Boston, this year, about, 1,600 barrels.”

poonaqgliiicasines Tue Wooity Arats —Oar Island paturalist while botanising along the border of Mayby’s Creek a week ago, observed the twigs of some alder bushes covered with patches of a white, woolly substance which, on eXamination, proved to to be that destructive pest of apple- orchards, the woolly aphis. As this is the first time that he has observed this nuisance or the Island, he advises the farmers in that locality to se~ure its destruction by burning the few limbs of alders on which it occurs. -_ Tut Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition opened at Truro on the 25th instant. Ex- Governer Archibald, in the course of his re- marks on the oceasion, said he had lately been visiting the great Northwest and consid- ered it certainly the finest country in the world. A tramp named Johnston, hailing from Boston, outraged a young girl twelve years old at St. Croix village, near Fredericton, N. B. When arrested, attempts were made to lynch the rascal, and were only frustrated by the watchfulness of the authorities.

CoLonEL TayLor, D. A. G., arrived here last evening and inspected Milton Camp this morning. The Band of the 82nd Battalion was in attendance. Colonel Taylor inspected the men in Battallion Drill and other military manceuvres. From what we can learn he ex- pressed himself as highly pleased with the Camp. Col. Taylor, who is in command of Camp Sussex, was obliged to return back this morning.

We take great pleasure in calling the attention of the public to the advertisement of Messrs. Beer & Sons. The new enterprise in the manufacture of soap, which the above firm have been the first to start on this Island, deserves well to succeed. The quality of soap manufactured by them is equal if not superior to any soaps imported here. Such being the ease, our merchants should give them their orders rather than sending them away to foreign dealers.

A small jail at Ashville, Ohio,was burned and one prisoner, name unknown, burned to death. He had considerable money, and it is thought that he was murdered and the building set on fire to conceal the crime.

Forest fires so threatened Fredericton on the evening of the 25th instant that, for the first time since the completion of the water- works, the engines were kept running all night, giving a water pressure of 100 lbs. The fires had nearly reached the city when a heavy rain commenced to fall and heavy showers fell during the night.

The general committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science has elected Lord Raleigh President for 1884. Among the Vice-Presidents are the Marquis of Lorne, Marquis of Lansdowne, Sir John A. .Macdonald, Sir Charles Tupper, Sir Alexander Galt, Right Hon. Lyon Playfair, Dr. Charles William Siemens and Prof. Huxley. The next meeting, which will be held in Montreal, has been fixed for 27th August, 1884.
