MUSINGS.

Mortal ! when thy heart is riven, ' Bythe shaft of earthly pain. Grieve not—for the hand of heaven. While it bruises, will sustain. Mourner i when the home is dreary, By a friend estranged, or dead, Weep not—for the lone and weary, Find a heavenly friend instead. When the raging thunder crashes— When thelightning stroke is near- Start not—Him that guides the ﬂashes We can trust as well as ﬁnr. When, in justice. he appals us, By the threat of endless pain, Sink not—soon his mercy calls us To his pard’ning arms again. Father 1 oh, with patience bless us, Till each seeming ill be past— For whatever gloom oppresstus, All must end in light atlast.

A BEAUTIFUL SIMPLE.

Paoor or Insane—It happened

that in I787, Miss Boydell, the niece of

Aldermen Boydell. was shot at in the street by a man who was arrested on the spot.—Iier clothes were set on ﬁre, but she suffered no serious injure, and, in- deed, it was never proved that the pistols were loaded with anything destructive. The prisoner turned out to be a medical practitioner named Elliot. On his trial the defence set up was insanity, in proof ot which Dr. Simmons, physician to St. Luke’s, came l'orwardatnong other wit- nesses. The doctor, in order to show the state ofthe unhappy man’s mind, pro- duced in court a paper which Elliot had sent to him, for the purpose of being pre- sented to the Royal Society, but which the doctor thou ht too visionary for that learned body. I-Ie called the attention of the court particularly to a passage in which the author asserted “ that the sun is not a bod of ﬁre, as hath been hither- to suppose , but that its light proceeds from a dense and universal attrora, which may afford ample light to the inhabitants ot that body’s surface beneath, and yet be at such a distance aloft as not to annoy them. No objection," he proceeds to say, " ariseth to the luminary’s being in- habited, and vegetation may obtain there as well as with us. There may be water and dry land, hills and dales, rain and fair weather; and, as the light, so the season must be eternal; consequently, it may be easily conceived to be by far the tnost blissful habitation of the whole sys- tem.” Here then we find adduced as a proof of the madness of Mr. Elliot the very doctrine which Herschel promul- gated with much applause eight years later.
