mark fcr humor. It isintended to show the reader where to laugh. In olden times, you know, the point cf the joke used to be printed in italics. Nowadays there is no way to show the point, and, as many of the jokes, such as ycurs, have no point, it is impossible to print the point in italics. Now, [suggest that a punctuation mark be placed at the be- ginning and at the end of everything supposed to be funny, so that the reader may be prepared to laugh when he be- gins to read and know when he has reached the point and it is time to langh. I would suggest that the mark be two little squares placed above the line, and I shall call it by my name. What do you think cf that fer an idea? It was suggested by your stuff, asI told you.”’

tabbits That Climb,

A correspondent writes tothe London Field that while he was hunting rabbits with ferrets in January he found rabbits on three occasions in willow trees which overhung the water of a mill stream. The miller said that it was not an un- usual circumstance. Some months ago The Field told of other rabbits which had been shot, like raccoons or opos- sums, out of trees in England. In re- cent years cases of rabbits in trees have been reported with increasing frequency. From Australia has come the most re- markable story of rabbits as climbers. The only way in which rabbits could be kept out of certain tracts of land in Australia was by the building of wire fences about them, the fences having meshes so small that the beasts could not crawl through and being so high that they could not jumpover. The rab- bits have clawed at the wires until their nails gradually have become hooked.

Some of the rabbits learned to scale the

fences, and then great additional ex- pense was necessary, for the top of the teuce had to be bent over like a J up- side down, with the hook out, so that the rodents could not get over the top. Australian rabbits are said to be learn- ing to climb trees for the leaves.

Ap Ingenious Defense,

An old darky was brought before a southern magistrate not long ago accused of{ ste. ling a neighbor’s chickens when the nights were dark and no one stirred abroad. The old man put up a long but weak argument, seizing upon every possi- ble straw to support his defense. The cvi- dence was too strong, however, and mat- ters were rapidly approaching a climax that meant a month of idleness in the town jail. The thought of this and the attendant ignominy stirred the old darky to a point where he did nothing but splut- ter out:

‘*’Pon my honer, jedge, 1’ze—er—l’ze didn’t done take ’em.”’

At last the judge grew tired and was about to sentence him when a broad smile iNumined the darky’s face as he cricd out:

‘I’ve got it, jedge. I’ze ean prove an alibi ‘bout dem chickens.’’

“Well, what is it??? exclaimed the judge.

‘You see, jedge, n6 por colored inan could take dem chicken? yt nighttime.’’

‘‘Tiow’s that? What do you mean?”

He Had Fallen Off.

Patrick was a new man in the light horse regiment, but his cheerfulness and witty replics had already cstablished him as a favorite. He had one draw- back, however, and that was his awk- wardness when on a herse’s back. Nat- urally his position required the opposite of this, and Patrick worked hard and fuithfully to acquire the ease and natu- ralness of hiscomrades when riding. He ecngratulated himself that this was at last accomplished.
