Sir,—I see by the Daily Patriot, of 20d and 8rd inst., that the editor of that paper has been publishing some very remarkable figures to show his friends why they should votefor Mr. Leitch at the coming Council Election, ln the issue of the 2nd he pub- lixzhes a statement taken from the Journals of the Legislative Council, in which he eodeavors to show that we have eaten up $199,844 of our capital, , I need not fell, you, Sir, that that report is not official, but gotten up by the Opposition in the Upper House for purposes of their own, and not vouched for by aty sworn officre. It,’ however, makes little difference to Mr. Laird whether the figures be correct or not, | so long as they serve his ends; he will’ scruple at nothing that will assist him and his party into power to give them a chance to flaece thdscowntry again, so he is not satisfied with the cooked figures of his friends in the Council, but draws censider- ably on his own imagination, and kindly tells us that the Suliivan Government have ruu the country into debt $100,000 up to the end of 1885. Good, Mr. Laird! that is a pretty fair whopper, but nothing ta what you are capable of telling in tho lofty flights of your imaginetion. ‘When Mr. Davies came into power, to- wards the close of 1876, there was a balance in favor of the Province of 40,604. Mr. Davies, in 1877, collected from the people of this country :—

Mr. Laird’s party,which he n w asks the people to support as the men who will economiz; the resources of the Province, went out of power after two years of ex- travagant mismanagement end misrule, having used up the balance of $40,000 in favor of the Province, having collected the enormous sum of $201,256 direct from the pockets of the farmers of this country, leaving a doficit in their two yeara work of $51,740, as shown by the Provincial Audi- tor’s statement in the journal of 1879, appendix N; or, in other words, after run- ning the country in debt to the tune of $92 345. I now propose to give a statement of the amounts collected by the present govern- ment during their six financial years, and the average per vear as compared with the Editor of the Patriot’s party of economy. In that statement ali arrears of poll tax are included sv as to give our opponents no room to find fault,as I consider our finan- cial record quite good enough even if we do give them a little advantage on their side. Yet these are the men whom Mr. Laird wishes the property holders of this country to restore to power by voting for Mr, Leitch. These figures, | submit, are sufficiently plain te show the taxpayers who are the best persons to protect their interests—those who have managed affairs for the last six years, taking out of your pocket each year $34,500 less than tho’ Davies’ Government did, or those who have collected enormous taxes, andrun the Island in debt in two years $39,423 more than the present Government in six years, , Oh! Mr. Laird says, you are eating up the capital of the country. Let us see how troe is this essertion: When Mr. Davies came into power in 1877, we had a balance of capital on debt account, $831,886. When he went out of power in 1878, wo find that account reduced to $793,356, and that Mr. Davies actually drew from eapital account at Ottawa. in two years, $38,529, as againat,our $447 in six years. We drew feom capital during our six years, an average of $74.50 yearly, while Mr. Davies drew a yearly average of $19,265. But that isnot all, Not only have we kept the Capital account Jeft us by Mr. Davies almost intact, but in looking for our rights from the Dominion we have largely in- creased it. When the present Government came into power in 1879, we had $793,366, now we have $975,872, or $182,576 hy which our capital has been increased, and we regularly receive $9,125 each year aa

Oh! but Mr. Laird will say, the present Government should not get credit for the increase in the debt account. When need we expect to get credit from Mr. Laird for any good we ever did? When was David Laird known to be honest or patriotic enough to give his opponents praise for anything they might do in the interest of the Province? I presume that if Mesers, Sullivan and Ferguson succeed in obtaining Dominion Government the amount of our claim,jit is little approval the will receive from the Patriot But this t

credit he gives them ; they have a more in- telligent jury than he to decide on their acts, in the honest aud upright yeomaury of the country, who are quite willing to accord to the men who have so faithfully guarded their interests their just meed of praise; as it willbe found they will do on the 15th by returning Mr. Bovyer to assist the present Government in justly adminis- tering the affairs of the coun'ry, as the peo- ple are beginning to understand very thor- oughly that Mr. Laird’s writings and figurea are like his political career—a farce and deception from beginning to end,

Oh ! but Mr Laird says we are eating up thejassets of the Province in the Land Office receipts. Ido nt attach any importance to Mr. Laird’s statement on this point, as land moneys have always been need as ordinary revenue by every Government, and will be by every successive government, I shall, however, submit a comparative statement of how matters, stood ia the Land Office when Mr. Davies went out of power, and how they stand now, just to show the dishonesty of Mr. Laird’s figures. We flad the amount dua in the Land Office from sales of lani in 1878 was $462,925. Balance due in 1884, $469,146, or after six years of the management of the office under the present government, we have over $6,009 more assets in the Land Office than when the present government came into power. But, says Mr. Laird, you drew $18,770 during your six years which would be an average of $3,128 for each year duar- ingour term, but Mr. Davies drew $46,547 in two years or an average of $23,273 each year. I do not use this however as a point in our favor, because these moneys were drawn only as they were required to pur- chase out the remaining proprietors; with this difference, however, that nearly $4,000 of the amount drawn by the present govern- ment was to pay Mr. Davies the balance of his fees as Counsel under the Land Purchase Act, which were due and should have been paid in 1877.

But, Mr. Laird says. the value of lands ansold in 1879 was $178,799, and in 1884 only $73,675. Where are these figares got, Lask? Certainly not from any official record. I find, however, that there wera unsold lands in 1879 of 210,183 acres, which, according to Mr. Liird’s figures, would be worth 85 cents per acre. In 1884 the unsold acreage was 122,583, which, at the same price, would amount to about $104,203, or something over $39,500 more than Mr. Laird gives us credit for, But $30,000 is nothing in his eyes when he writes to make @ point against an opponent.

There is just one more point that [ must notice in Mr. Laird’s false statement, which is that the present Government have run the country in debt this year by $50,000. This is the grossest falsehood of the wholeflot. It is true that,on account of the smallpox scare, the Land Oilice officials were prevented from visiting the eastern portions of Queen’s aud Kiag’s Counties, and no doubt the Goverament lost thereby $14,000 or $15,000; but with all these drawbacks, we have a good record to show

The present Government having light- ened the burdens of the people by a yearly average of $34,500, having expended $40,- 000 in 1884 for education more than Mr. Davies paid in 1878 ; having paid for the maintenance of the Asylum, Poor House and paupers $9,158 more in 1884 than in 1878, and $3,485 more to improve the ferries for the accommodation of the pub- lic, we find the balance against the Province to be (1884) $54,657; balance left by Davies Government, 1879, $51,740; increase of deficit in six years of present Gov- ernment only §2,917, showing that
