I: It is perhaps unfortunate that po- .1 tatoes were not specifically included I 9 in the list of products protected by I6 price floor legislation at the time it I’ was enacted. The Stabilization Act . was intended to give protection to 3 V those commodities which are of over- I all importance to the economy; and certainly potatoes come under that heading in various parts of Canada, particularly in this Province and New Brunswick. Surely, no one would claim that soya beans, which have been giv- err protection, mean more to the Can- ‘ sdian economy than potatoes. I t. may be that the fairly high price i. paid for potatoes early in the Spring ‘ 5 was a factor in keeping them off the list. But the attention of Federal of-

The situation now is uncertain. Provincial officials have done every- thing they could to convince agricul- ture authorities of the necessity for protection of the mainstay of this Island's economy; but whether the re- sponse will be favourable is open to doubt at the moment. The Federal Minister of Agriculture is quoted as saying that he wanted to be “sure” that a potato surplus does in fact exist. before giving his approval for a floor price. That ought not to be a_ difficult thing to ascertain. Our un-

gs. Farm Apprenticeship . I In 'this' Province, as in other perts of Canada, there hasbeen a continued exodus of young people from farms in recent years. Various remedies have been attempted, and some-—’s‘uoh as easier credit facilities and subsidized agricultural training —are certainly of benefit. So too are our 4-H Clubs and other movements originating among our younger farmers themselves. But the prob- lem remains acute, and is a source of- concern to all interested in the future of our agriculture industry. One move that h-as been made in Britain to counter the drift from the land might well be given con- sideration. This was. the setting up, in 1953, of a Farm Apprenticeship Scheme. In a recent edition of the BBC’s Overseas program, “Land and Livestock", Hugh Crowle, who or- ganized the scheme, pointed out that farming has made great scientific and technical advances since the pre-war years, and in Britain, while the labour force was decreasing, the technical knowledge required from each farm worker was increasing. “The idea of apprenticeship is not new,” he said, “and the scheme for farming is based on industrial ap- prenticeship which has been success- fully operated for many years. Boys and girls are recruited ‘at school leaving age, and after interview and selection, are registered as appren- tices under a Deed of Agreement be- tween apprentice and employer. They are then placed on farms, care- fully selected ‘by a local committee of farmers and farm workers. The training period is three years, and since the aim of the Scheme is to turn out more highly skilled farm men, the bulk of the training is prac- lical work. Other countries have shown considerable interest, and details of the scheme have been sent to Australia and New Zealand. Western Germany is already operat- ing a very successful scheme on sirrnlar lines. Would it not be possible tb have a. full investigation of its possibilities in Canada?

The Rev. Dr. John McNab, the newly-elected Moderator of the ‘Gen- eral Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, is a man of parts. At one time and another he has serv- ' ed his Church as editor, author, mil- itary.chaplain and pastor. Perhaps he is best known as editor-in-chief of the Presbyterian Record which under his direction greatly increased its circulation.

The articles of indulgence to the inhabitants of Isle Saint-Jean- were signed by two delegates re- presenting the inhabitants a nd Commodore, Charles Knowles. The two delegates were Louis Closquinet of Peugiguix River (Pisquld River) and Jean Chain- lay of Saint-Pierre dvu-Nord (now St. Peters Harbour).

The principal provisions of this indulgence were the following: “That the inhabitants shall forth- with send one of their principal men to reside in this place (Louisburg) as their Deputy t transact all business in their be half with His Majesty’s govern- ment. Also that they shall send 10 or 12 of their principal young men to reside here (Louisburg) as hostages for the due perfor- mance oi the terms of this In- dulgence. And that they shall likewise send, as soon as poss- ible, one-half of their live-stock they nowhave upon the said Is- land, for which they will be paid a reasonable price, That a small vessel shall be desipallched to pass and repass between Iaouisburg and the Island of Saint John, in vuhich they will be obliged to send the cattle and other provis- ions which that Island produces. They must also furnish our gar- rison with wood, coal and lime for which they will be paid the current prices. And upon convic- tion of breach of, or non com- pliance with, any of the artic- les of the Indulgence, the delin- quents shall be immediately de- livered to the governor at Louis- burg, or the hostages will suf- fer according to the utmost ri- gour of War."

Ever since the British had been in possession of Ac-aidiia they had governed it from Annapolis (Port Royal of the French), but had made no attempt to take effec- tive possession of the land by colonization. They had but a small garrison in the delapida- ted little fort, and the total Brit- ish population amounted only to some 40 or 50 families. while the Acadian population amounted to about 5,000 souls.

HALIFAX FOUNDED Accordingly, Halifax was foun- ded in the summer of 174-9. Ed- ward Cornwallis was made gov- ernor of the new establishment.

and he was given a series of in- structions among which were that the Acadians should be al- lowed freedom of religion and the peaceful possession of such lands as were then in cultiva- tion. provided that they took the oath of allegiance within three months from the date of a pro- clamation to that effect. He was also to exercise a careful’super- vision over the French priests in the country, to refuse his as- sent to the exercise of episcopal jurisdiction by the Bishop ,of Quebec, and do all in‘hls pow- er by educatlo_n~and intermar- riage lo encourage the Acadians to become British and Protestant. As a result of these events there followed a large influx of Acadians to Isle Saint-Jean. The task of receiving and locating the newcomers wa.s surely no easy one. Much privation and great hardship were endured and the officials at port Lajo_ie were at: their wits‘ ends in their attempt to cope with the large numbers who arrived penniless. Small quantities of alcohol also can be a temporary help. Alxohol. of course. la la depressant. not a stimulant. However. a little aids in relieving tension and postpon- ing faligue. ' - SMOKING MAY HELP

‘The same holds true for smok- ing. Excessive smoking will make you feel’ more tired. Smoking 3. little will help fight off fatigue. The nicotine. you see. quickens pulse rate and increases the blood sugar supply to the brain, thus relieving that tired feeling. 1 There are other ways of boost- ing the blood sugar level, too. F equent snacks are of value. T sts. indicate that the blood su- gar level rises to a peak within an hour after eating 9. big meal, then declines rapidly.
