Now a "true" high blood pressure is something that must not be treat- ed in any careless way, because it definitely shows that the bloodves- scls are really old and that danger is ever at hand particularly if there should be, any excitement or mo much physical effort used. In these true cases, that is where the blood pressure both diastolic and systolic is too high, rest and treatment are absolutely necessary to prolong life. The diastohc pressure is the pres- sure of the blood against the blood vessels at all times, that 1s with no band. tightened around the arm shutting off the pressure. The sys- tolic is the pressure that is found when the band around the arm is tightened to shut of! the pressure or the pulse as noted at the wrist.

Now if you have eaten a. big meal, have taken a stimulating drink, or are excited, this systolic pressure may go up twenty or thirty points or enough to give what is called high blood pressure. _

Purple Gold (Winnipeg Free Press)

Smiths who work in gold and jewelers whose finger-tips are sen- sitive to the touch and the charm of ancient Jewelied trinkets, have been for eleven years mystified by the purple gold buried in the tomb of King Tutankhamen thirty cen- turies ago. The trinkets were of an exquisite design and of chaste handiwork; but that they might display Egypt in superb degree was only to be expected. The gold was purple, and yet malleable, ductile; and this amazed and puzzled those qualified to finger the kmgly fili- gree adommcnta._ Something fa- miliar to the Ancients was, once again, unknown t0 the Modems.

Gold is not purple. It is yellow, and when shined sheds a. lustre that is resplendent. This lustre may be dulled or made to partake of hues, but only as its purity is alloy- ed. Goid may take on even a red- dish tinge, as had‘ the British Sov- ereign, now entombed in burial vaults that may remain sealed as long as did the tomb of King Tut. Or gold may, by multiple reflec- tions, become orange, and by ab- sorption of certain alloys, such as platinum, even become white. Or again, precipitations may produce brown, black, blue or pink gold, but these are not refinements. To the goidsmlth they are reductions of purity, and by comparison with the regal brilliance of King Tut's purple gold, they are sham disoolorations. Looking on this purple gold, present-day scientists thought it might have been brought about by Time's corroding discoloration; but purple is not the tinge of old gold.
