Mr. Frank Buckland has lately published his fourteenth annual report as an inspector of Salmon Fisheries in Enel: und and Wales. Of the Canadian salmon received in Lon- don in December, Mr. Buckland speaks very highly. ‘‘ They were,” he says, “as fine salmon as | ever saw, many being over thirty p unds in weight, and even if the external appearance “had been insuflicient to prove tuem to have been ‘clean run,’ an examination of the viscera was amply sufticier to show they were in the highest possib_: condition. It was _thought advis- able to try the experiment of sending them over to the English markets, freezing them by a patent process, and the experiment succeeded admirably. So far as aware, the public who bought it were perfectly satisfied as to its appearance and quality, and during this next winter, directly the British fisheries are closed, the public may expect a large supply of frezen fish from Canada. This will neces- sarily very much effect the price of Durch fish, an«l it is possible that in course of time it inay also effect the British salmon fisheries.”

STEWART VS. LAWSON,

Tue action of W. D. Stewart vs. 8. G. Lawson, for defamatory libel, was com- menced this morning. ‘The Courtroom was thronged. Malcolm Meigod, Q. ., and A. Peters appeared for the prosecutor ; E, J. Hodgson, Q. C., for the traverser. The evidence so far has been of a formal nature. We condense as follows:

Hi, A. M¢PHERsoN—(examined by Mr. %, McLeod(—knows 8. G. Lawson, and W. D. Stewart. Stewart has been a Commission Merchant, and is so now. 8. G. Lawson is editor of the Presbyterian newspaper, which has been issued by him for several years. Identifies the paper, and also a copy pur- chased by him at the store of H. A. Harvie, in which the alleged libel appeared.

James P. Harper, clerk in store of H. . Harvie, (sworn) not sold the Presbyterion, before the date in which the alleged libel appeared. Mr. &. G Lawson brought the papers to Harvies hitm- self on the Sth August, for sale, and they were sold to everyone who asked for them.

James D. IrvinG, (sworn)—Is Deputy Prothonotary of Supreme Court. There was & sult puaree lately between 8. G. Lawsen and W. D. Stewart. Read first count of srciice of the libel complained of in that suit. [t is identical with an extract in the article published in the Presbyterian of the Sth August. Read also 4th count of said declaration, which is iden- tical with another extract in said article. The suit was docketed iast term and a re- traction or confession in sectlement of the suit, was made by 5S. G. Lawson and wit- nessed by Neil McLeod.

Davin Lawson, (sworn)—Have seen the handwriting of 8. G. Lawson. ‘The sig- nature to the retraction iooks like his but witness 18 not positive.
