Had he been possessed of any of the avarice of Mr. Laird—that beggar’s vice which has characterized his whole public career, whether as supplier of Government stationery, or betrayer of his political leader in 1874, or barterer of the Island's inier- ests for a Governorship in the Northwest— Mr. Whelan might have been in com- parative affluence at the time of his death But like all great public men he hada soul above such things. He left to his family nothing but that remembrance of integrity which gives sanctity to misfortune and renders poverty respectable.

The ex Governor may have been qnita earnest in his denunciations of Mr. Whelan in those days, for few will believe him capable of giving credit to a public man for any higher motive in politics than greed; but remembering the relations existing between them during Whelan’s life, David Laird should hesitate before bringing back to the minds of the people of this Province the early stages of ‘‘ the base degrees by which he did ascend.”
