HIS Eminence Cardinal Gibbons preach. ed in_ St. Dunstaut’s Cathedral Sunday morning. The building was packed to the doors with an expectant congregation. The Cardinal spoke for upwards of half an hour. His sermon was one of the most impressive that has been heard with- in the Cathedral walls, and truly Catho- lic too. He referred to his visit to the Island and the hospitality of the people in the highest terms and regretted that he could not stop longer. At the request of the bishop he made a. few remarks in reference to erecting a new Cathedral and hoped to have an excuse for return- ing to the Island either at the laying of the corner stone or the consecration. The Cardinal left Sunday afternoon for Rustito; thence he goes to Summerside, on Tuesdny,where he will take the steam- er en route to Baltimore, Wednesday morning.

Snt,--—This morning I went to hear Cardinal Gibbons preach, and certainly it was a treat. The sermon was not what could be called a great intellectual effort, but it was eminently‘ Christian. In fact I have never in all my life heard a sermon which contained more of the pure Chrietran spirit. “The object of Christianity was the moral improvement of man. It did not consider a man's nationality or social position, it did not considersman'spaouliarreligion-whether he was a Protestant or Catholic; itconcern- ed itself with a man’s_manh -cd and how to improve it"——and much more of such a- kind did he say: Now if the R1338!) Men now a-days are becoming more and more inclined to allow every individual man to accept whatever dog mas he pleases, and unite on some grand general platform such as Cardinal Gibbons laid down. Snt,3-It is to be hoped that f‘the fuss” made over the removal of the old house formerly the R.’ 0. city hospital through the streets in mid-summer will prevent the City Council in the future from allow ing old houses toibe moved through the streets of the city. Old houses, when owners think it to their interest to sell them by auction, should be pulled down on the spot by the purchaser. It is intol- erable that because a man thinks he can make-a few -dollars by purchasing an old house he should be allowed the free use of the streets ti the city for its removal to the great inconvenience of citizens, in- juring the streets and the few trees we have, and obstruction to traffic.

As a pretty large tax payer I only voice the opinions of-‘ citizens by saying that it should not be ‘allowed. There may be excbptional canes where a man wants to move an old house to some other part of big .property,’bt]l2 as a rule I. hope the City Fathers will not allow this nuisance to be continued.
