How the Od Chamolsa Teaches the Young- ster to Jump.

We had a full half hour to walt before the drive began and were rewarded by one of the prettiest and most interesting sights and lessons in natural history I have ever scen—namely, the sight of an old chamois giving its young kid a lesson in jumping. I must premise by mentioning that it is very didicult—in fact, impossible—for any one but a very old hand to distinguish a buck chamots from a doe as they are mov- ing, and the rule is n@t to shoot ut a chamois if it hasa kid with it, as that jaa pretty sure sign it is a doe.

A few minutes after we had been sented quietly at our posts, and before the drive began the keeper called my attention to a chamofs’ head and neck which had sud- denly appeared on the sky line about 150 yards off. It turned out to be a doe with a kid. They came along slowly, not at all thinking of danger and not in any way as yet Gisturbed by the drivers, who were a mile or two away and who had not yet he gun to drive. They both came quietly Jown the steep mountain side until they ‘ame to a place where there was a dro} wf about 12 feet, and then took place the following beautiful sight, which was also witnessed by S. and his jeger from where they sat: The old chameis jumpea down, as a. ni.tter of course, but the kid fanked and would not follow. The old yne looked up at it and then went back another way to the ledge on which the kid Was standing and again jumped down so as to show the young one how to doit and looking up teit as much as tosay: ‘Come along, you little stupid! It won’t hurt you.’’ But the kid funked again and would not follow. ‘Tie mother thereupon return- ed a second time to the ledge and proceed- ed to push the kid with her head and made it jump down and followed it herself. then came the climax, The old one and the young one both went round again to the same ledge, and the old one jumped own first, and this time the kid followed lnmediately, having been taught that it was sufe and easy enougou.—Duadiminton Magazina

When the weather Is fine, neither too hot oor too cold, and the preceptress herself bas tested Iv by sticking her head out of the window, four or five of the most dig- nified pupils of a North Side boarding school for girls are allowed to accompany that learned lady in a stroll shout the

most elevating parts of Lincosn purs When the boarding school girl cons not follow the lines indicated by comic opera litrettists and farce writers, she is apt to

go to the other extreme and be very stifi indeed. She has more starch about her than a steam laundry. She can frown you put of existence ata blow. Her triviali ties must be all of the most ethereal and esoteric kind. She is bound by convention and walied in by formality, and, above all, she isthe properest creature of a very prop er age.

Three or four cf the latter class were sented one afternoon on a rustic torture endeavoring to extract beauty out of the H°O of Lake Michigan. ‘Their guide and teacher wore one of those smniles which, to borrow an expression from photography, may be called a long exposure.

Presently, on another seat, within easy hearing distance, sat twe fashionably dressed ladies. They were members of the drarmatio professior, although no one could have guessed it by their appearance. From their piquant ways the girls from the boarding schoo] took them to be but- terflies of sosiety, perhaps ornamonting the very top set. They became immediate- ly interested.

“Did you hear about m7 new engage- ment?’’ said one of the newcomers.

‘*‘A nother alrendy? You don’t mean it!” said the other. ‘‘Why. that’s four you’ve had in as many months.”’

“IT know 1t,’’ responded the first, ‘“‘and this may not last very long either.’’

It is needloss to say that the five young Jadies and their preceptress were shocked. They had nover heard, even read, of such duplicity.

‘*How do you like his company?’’ esked one. ‘*Not at all,’’ replied the other.

““That’s too bad,’’ said the first. “I should think you would be very happy.’’

“IT would be,’’ replied the other, ‘‘ but, you see, I’m playing a dual role.”’

‘*Well, it may be trying,’’ responded the second, ‘‘but I wish I were in your place. Is he an ‘angel?’ ”’

‘‘No, but that young man whom he calls his partner is.’’

This was more than the auditors could stand, and, at a signal from the precep- tress, they marched home thoroughly bor- ror stricken.—Chicago Exchange.
