Thomas Milner Gibson. DEATH OF TRE ANTI-CORN LAW AGITATOR | —THE RVENT OF HIS LIFE RECAULED. |

The Right Honorable Thomas Mil- ner Gibsoo, who was prominent in the | anti-Corn Law movements In operation with Mr. Cobden and Sir| Robert Peel, is dead at the age of seventy-seven years, The deceased was | born at Trinidad in 1807, the only son | of the late Major T. Milner Gibson, of the 27th Regiment. He was educated at the Charter House, and graduated B. A. in 1830 as a wrangler at Trinity Uollege, Cambridge. He was elected member for Epswich in the Conserva- tive interest in 1837, but his opinions undergoing a change, he resigned his seat in 1839, and on again appealing to the electors of the constituency was de- feated. He contested the borough of Cambridge without success in the same year, and in consequence of these political reverses remaioed out of Par- liament, for some vears,and during this interval entered into the great movement which had for its object the repeal of the corn laws. He became one of the leading Corn Law League, and in 1841 was invited to stand for the Manchester, and after a close contest with Sir Geerge Murray was returned for the constituency. In 1546, at the conclusion of the anti-Corn Law agita- tion, he was appointed Vice-President of the Board of Trade ia Lord John Russel’s Administration. In April, 1845 he resigned, as his connection with the Ministry was embarrassing him with his constituents. During the struggle with Russia he closely indentified him- self with the “Peace Party,” and in consequence of this action was defeat- ed at the general election of 1857, but soon afterward was returoed for Ashton- under-Lyne, which he represented un- til December, 1868. In 1859 he was made President of the Board of Trade, with a seatin the Cabinet. Ho was ac- tive at various times in having removed the newspaper stamp, the advertise- ment duty, and the excise on paper, aud for his public services in these res- pects he was presented witha testi- monial in 1861. He was made a Privy Councilor in 1846, resigned the Pre- sidency of the Board of Tradeon the dissolution of the Ruesell Ministry in 1866, and unsuccesstully contested Ashton-under-Lyne in 1868.

tO — A Parisian Episode.

Mrs. “Bonanza” MeKay had her picture painted by the celebrated Meis- scaonier, the favorite artist of Paris. Whether the Bonanza King’s wife has been blessed with more or less than the average share of beauty we do not know, but this we do know, that the potrait, which costa lot of money and was the talk of the town, did not please her, and she forthwith demolished it and employed the fragments in replenishing her fire. It was somewhat of an ex- pensive house-warming, but Mrs. Mc.-~- kay could afford to have her ,way-But she kindled a bigger fire than she knew, for she set Paris in a blaze,and the incident has, in the lack of anything more en- grossing, become almost interaational in its importance. Newspapers devote columns to it. Le Figaro made it the subject of a two column leader. It fulminates at poor Mrs. McKay as only an angy Frenchman can. It sees in the up-lifted axe of the “‘foreign woman” the blow which the rich Americans mean to strike not only at French art and genuis, but at “‘irreproachable artistic conscience” as well.

Yet eut of evil cometh good, and indiguant Paris has resolved to give Meissonnier a dinner. How well Paris gauges humanity, For the insulted artistic pride of the painter it pre- -2ribesjas a sovereiga balm the triumphs of an artist of adifferent sort. Art has been insulted,so they will feed the artist. Truly they know how to live in Paris. Meaawhile, what about Mrs. McKay and the new incursion of Goths and Vandals of which she is the pioneer. Probably the good lady is as innocent of any desire to insult France or French art as the editor of Figaro himself. Her picture did not suit her aad she burned it up, and so farassheis concerned that is all there is of it. But Paris is sensitive. She reserves to herself the right to insult her great men.

The Government, doubtless having in mind certain references to the Marquis of Salisbury’s cotton property io Hatfield, extend the enquiry torura! populations. The Princo’s speech justifies them by describing the condition of his Norfolk peasantry when he acquired Sandring- ham estate.

Mr. Backle, the new editor of the London Times, is only 33. He owes his appoiatment to an Oxford friendship with young Mr. Walter. The Times willbe managed by Mr. Walter, Sr., Mr. Walter, Jr., and Mr. Macdonald, with Mr. Buckle as a figurehead. He wou pleaty of prizes at Oxford, wrote the prize peem, acted for some time as Mr. Cheney’s assistant, and is generally regarded as an extremely bright fellow.
