Henry Thiiinas. who is retiring as a harness racing driver. was tendered a "night" at Roosevelt Raceway on Friday, May 25th. It WES the first time in the history of hariiess racing that a driver iiiis honored in such a fashion. t'crcmoiiics were held at the cen- ter of the track last Friday night to commemorate the great feats of this veteran harness racing figure. Tributes were paid to him by his fellow drivers and train- ers. track executives. harness writers. breetiers and the New York State Commission officials. Henry Thomas spent 55 of his 67 years racing horses and has been one of the most outstanding fig- ures on the harness racing scene. llr- has been a fixture at Roose- iclt Raceway since the opening oil the track in 1940 and twice won the Roosevelt driving title. first in 1048 and again in 1051. Among his .u mpltshments was the rare feat of winning the Han ietonian. the world's greatest trotting stake. three times. In 1037 he did it with Shirley Hanover. the next year ullli McLin Hanover and in 1044 with Yankee Maid. During his long career he won 30 major stakes.
