EF, Island mess at $13.50 to $14.50. In Mont- real the quotations are: Canadian short cut, heavy, $21 to $22 per Jbarre'; Cana- dian short cut, light, $19 to $22 per barrel.

LECTURE AT NEW PFRTH,

Father Matthew, the apostie of temper- ance, was the subject of a very interest- ing, instructive and well delivered lecture by Rev. W. Lawson, of Montague, on Monday evening, the 15th inst. Mr. J Dewar nresided. All were delighted with the sentiments expressed, a: well as the humor and good common sense that per- vaded every sentence. The various

virth at Thomastown, in 1790, to his ex- pulsion from Maynooth, his apostolic blows and knocks summarily inflicted

upon a cruel landlord for turning upon the road a poor mother with three helpless children, and his large and Christlike sympathy with the down trodden of his native land, were depicted in a style at once masterly and eloquent. _ Besides his noble work for Ireland, it is computed that no less than 3,000,000 in America signed the pledge and received the beue- diction of the good priest during his only visit to that country. Like Paul of old he said at last, “I have fought a good fight,” &c. Mr. Lawson concluded by remarking that the name of Theobald Matthew would go down to posterity as one of the greatest heroes of this or anv other century.

A special from Montreal to te New York Evening Post says Judge Valle, the Stipendiary Magistrate for the north district of the St. Lawrence, has returned to Quebec after a five months’ visit to the Canadian Labrador, the Island of Anti- costi and other places.

He reports that the fishing along the Labrador has been very bad and unless Government assistance is promptly sent many deaths from starvation must oecur. The price of cod fell during the summer

from 80 to 50c. per quintal, and the outlook is rendered more discouraging by the probability that none of the timber limits there will be worked this year.

As forthe coast Indians, their condition is even worse than that of the fishing col- onies, the yield of their hunt this year having been very poor, and the Hudson’s Bay Company’s agents having refused in many places to make them further ad- vances. The reasons assigned by the com- pany for making no more advances are that the Indians do not adhere to their agreements to bring their furs to the people who advance them provisions, and because they exchange their turs for strong liquor. The Indians themselves com- plain that their anu :al hunts have yielded less than for some years past, owing to the great forest fires which have ravaged the interior of the peninsula. During the past summer more than one hundred and fifty miles of their hunting grounds were completely swept by fire.

$1,340,000 worth; in 1893 it was $1,100,- 1000. The advantage of Canadian fisherman is that he has the undisturbed run within the three mile limit, bat never- theless our fisherinen are injured by the operations of our neighbors outside of that limit. This is a very impertant point.

The fact that the usual instructions have been issued to heads of departments to prepare their estimates for Parliament has given rise to a report that the will open very early next year. There is nothing in the order to prepare estimates to indicate an unusually early session, as the instruction to prepare estimates is giv- en about the middle of October every year. Sir John T hompson told Mayor Cox a few days ago, when the fixing of a date for the Ottawa carnival was under consideration, that Parliament would not meet before the 22nd January, and there is no reason to suppose that any earlier date has been fixed upon.
