A convoy of stores for the Lindley garrison also attacked on the 28th. But after a heavy rear guard action, the convoy reached Lindley in safety.

Cheques for Fishing Bounty the Subject of a Protest.

In the Senate, a few days ago, there was a long discussionen the medeof deal- ing with fishiog bounty cheques, a matter in which Hon. Donala Ferguson alleged that great favouritiem existed. Hon. Mr. Fergueon reminded the House that last year he bad moved for a return showing the distribution of the fishing bounty. It now come to his knowlege that irregulari- ties were still going on. Hedid sot pro- pose to touch much upon the question of whether the cheques were earned. It was now learoed that the chequee were sent to a Dr. Wickham, in Prince Edward Is- land. When parties asked for their cheques they were told they were in Dr. Wickham’s bands. Oa enquiry it appeared that Dr. Wigkbam was not ao officlal ef the Depar -—It seemed to be a case of Wickham, interfering in the overseer’s | work. He read anumber of letters be- tween Mr. Jobn Albert Breanan, aod Mr. Jobn Hardie, chiefclérk of the Fisheries Department, and accusing Mr Davideon, the overseet, of allowing Dr. Wickham to interfere with hie work. The letters also complain of bounty cheques being hand- edover to Dr. Wickham. Mr. ae loaned money to a bounty recipient nam- ed O’Reilly, taking an assignment.

The cheque had been handed over to Dr. Wickham by Mr. Davidson, who held no assignment, but the department refused to recognize the claim, as the chaape could not be handied hy doy one but the payee. Mr. Ferguson charged that great favourit- ism wes showm in these cheques being
