Ex-Governor Laird and Mr. L. H. Davies are the Grit standard bearers in Queen’s County, P. E. Island.
Since 1876 Mr. Davies has drawn $17,- 362 62 of Govern'nent money in different capacities. In 1878 the last year of the Grits, he pocketed $8,212 00.

Summerside Notes.
The weather for the past few days has been much more favorable for farming operations, and farmers have been taking advantage of it. The rain, however, has again set in this morning.
A fatal accident happened at New Annan on Saturday, whereby a boy, son of Captain Kenneth Ellis, lost his life. The boy, who was only twelve years old, was in charge of a span of horses which took | fright, throwing the little fellow out of the waggon, the wheels of which passing over his head, caused almost instant death. _Much sympathy is felt for the parents.
; oie _ . | Tuesday is nomination day, and it is } anticipated that alarge crowd will be in town, as the June term of the Supreme Court sits that day. In all probability the speeches of the candidates will be made in Ludlow Hall immediately after nomina- tion.
Mr. David Grady has opened and fitted up a first-class hotel opposite the station, suitable for the most fastidious. It is com- fortably furnished, aud we have no doubt the landlord will get his fair share of patronage.
Quite a scene was presented at the Rail- way Station on Wednesday evening, preparatory to the train starting for Ken- sington, where Messrs, Hackett, Rogers, Yeo and Perry were to hold a meeting. Groups of the supporters of the different parties were largely diseussing the situa. tion, while every new and again you would hear such expressions as: ‘‘ It will bea desperate fight ; but Hackett and Rogers will get in.”—‘* What about Jamie Yeo?” -—** No chance this year.”—* Rogers and Hackett— Rogers and Hackett.”
Mr. Rogers’ health seems to have im- proved within the last two or three days, and he looked remarkably well as he step- ped on board the train for Kensington.
Your correspondent was unable to be present at the meeting which, from report, seems to have been quite a success.
Senator Carvell and Richard Hunt, Esq., returned from New Brunswick on Wednes- day evening. The Senator took train for Charlottetown.

On Monday last we were shown a broad- cast seed sower just invented by Mr. John Dickieson, of this town, which appears to j merit attention. We were shown fields of both wheat and vats sown by it, and noth- ing could exceed the evenness of distance at which the blades appear above ground. The machine is very simple in its construc- tion, and is consequently less liable to de- rangement than others of a more compli- cated build. The same seed-box will do equally well for sowing grass seed as well as grain; but there is a grass seed attach- ment added, so that grain and grass seed may be sown simultaneonsly. The machine can, however, be sold with or without the grass seed attachment. The quantity of grain or grass seed to the acre can be regu- lated at will, while an indicator shows the exact amount. By a very simple arrange- ment, the number of reres passed over is shown by an indicator for that purpose. In this way fields of whatever size or sha are measured in acres as well as sown with serd. Meeting at Somerset
Hackett and Rogers Supported by an Overwhelming Majority.
A mass meeting was held in Somerset Hall, Somerset, last evening.
Addresses were delivered by Messrs. Hackett and Rogers, the Government candidates, and by Messrs. Yeo and Perry, the Opposition candidates.
Strong speeches, on behalf of the Gov- ernment, were also made by Senator Howlan, E. J. Hodgson and G. W. Bent- ley, Esquires.
John W. Hughes, Esq., also spoke. Messrs. Rogers and Hackett were pro posed by Peter Duffy, Esq., and seconded by John T. Murphy, Esq. ay The nominations were carried mously.
Messrs. Yeu and Perry were also pro- posed—the proposer and seconder only voting for them.
The meeting was enthusiastic and unani- mous.
Three rousing cheers were given fer Senator Howlan, and three for the Govern- ment Candidates.
Prince County is safe for the Government Candidates.
Meeting at Kelly ‘Cross, UNANIMOUS FOR Government Candidates.
A Merrtina of the electors of Queen's County was held at Kelly’s Cross, on Wed- nesday night. Over’one hundred and fifty electors were present.
It was addressed by the candidates on both sides.
The meeting was unanimous in favor of the Government candidates.

It is stated that Senator McPherson suc- ceeds Sir A. T. Galt as Canadian Commis: sioner to Great Britain.
Hon. Mr. McKenzie is lying seriously ill at Markham. His condition gives rise to gravest apprehensions. Medical men have been consulted. His friends hope he may recover so as to avcid the necessity of placing another candidate in the field.
Sir John McDonald met with a splendid reception in Hamilton last night from all the leading citizens. An address of con- tidence was presented to him by the work- ingmen of that city.
The Liberal candidates from Ottawa call- ed a meeting last night. The conservative candidates attended, spoke, and carried the meeting three to one. Mr. McIntosh called upon all the meeting, who agreed with him tu stand up, and by this means showed the feeling of the meeting.
Mr. Dalton McCarthy and Mr. Mowatt, Premier of Ontario, met at Barrie, yesterday, and discussed the Boundary Question. Mr. Mowatt declared that the Government were trying to defraud Ontario of territory, at biddiug of other Provinces. Mr. McCarthy, in one of the most telling and argumentative speeches, completely convinced the meet- ing that Mowatt was wrong.
Mr. McCarthy showed pubic documents as proof, but Mowatt had none. McCar- thy carried the meeting two to one.
The Reformers admit Mowatt inferior to McCarthy as a debater.
Tue Patriot unceasingly prates about faxing the poor man’s flour. It forgets that Alex. Mackenzie in a speech at Halifax said :—‘‘ Now, when your leaders come down here they declare, as Dr. Tupper did the other day, that a tax on flour would not raise the price one cent, and Dr. Tup- per quotes me as an anthority for that statement : ‘‘ WELL I DO BELIEVE IN IT; I BELIEVE THAT NO TAX WILL A®FECT THE PRICE OF A OOM. MODITY OF WHICH WE PRODUCE A SURPLUS.”

The school boards, both Protestant avd Catholic, have been badly smitten of late with the elaborate building mania, have spent all their funds on architec: tural adornments, and they now find them- selves in a bankrupt condition.
