Provincial Election

Dear Fellow Students,

It is with great pleasure that I congratulate the UPEI Soccer Panthers for' the capture of the AUAA Soccer Championships for yet another year with their victory this past Sunday. It is with the same pleasure that I will be con- gratulating them when they walk away with the Eastern Canadian Championships this coming week- end. Undoubtly my pleasure will continue to rise as they spiral towards excellence and the national championships.

However, presently l come with a different message but one which is also associated with a potential victory. Shortly, a provincial

election will be called. Perhaps it -

will have been called by the time you read'this article'. This is a great opportunity for us to express student issues before the three parties. Issues ranging from stu- dent loans and student housing to better athletic facilities on this campus stand before us and they

should stand before the candi- dates who wish to be elected. It is the duty of your student repre- sentatives to present the issues and have them attened to.

The worst thing we can do is to think of ourselves as powerless. The student body and their families constitute a very large part of the local population and a substantial portion of other ridings in the province. We also have natural allies at the Holland College Student Union, in the Charlottetown Tenant’s Associa- tion for better housing facilities, and in the ranks of the unemploy- ed for a better future.

Most people agree that the up- coming election will be decided by a very close margin. This is just a theory but it should be a great encouragement to'us. Students are encouraged to enumerate them- selves in the local areas for the upcoming election if . they now reside in Charlottetown. This will

greatly increase our influence if .

we are able to articualte our con- cerns to the parties.

The Student Union is preparing to organize an open forum for students to be attended by the three party leaders. This will be an opportunity for all students to size up the leaders on student issues. As well, the Student Union will be hosting a series of meetings in a few weeks before the election to establish priorities from the student point 'of view. Students are encouraged to attend these and voice their concerns.

No, political issues are no' as eXciting as soccer games. Hewevcr the victory, can be just as sweet if we make some small steps towards maintaining quality education which is affordable for all people. The Student Union government has little power to solve our problems by itself. However, we do have the power to influence the next government who will direct the future of university education in this province.
