Appeal for Coercion.

The London Times, in a leading one

of the 26th ult., says: ‘* We fear that Mr. | Forster was unable to encourage his col- leagues with a report that lawlessness is abating in Ireland. I[t is too plain that the most detestable outrages daily occur, and

that unparalleled terrorism has been im-

poset upon three Irish counties. The e” s is 1

law is almost powerless to prevent these

crimes or to punish the criminals. The authorities have made every efiort to pro- tect life and property by employing the ordinary forces, but the conspiracy is too strong aud subtle to be so restrained. The utmost that ean be done effectually at present is to defend the few persons who ate tureatened. Some eighty Irish gentle- men aro under police protection. Lege! enforcement of contracts relat- ing to land is at an end in most parts of Munster and Cannaught, and the lawlessness of the peasantry and, of the masses in the towns 1s seething and spreading. These facts continue to cause grav anxiety to the authorities of Ireland, and we may conclude that the Cabinet has! not resolved to set aside their views even fora short time without much hesitation and inisgiving ; but the decision has been adop‘ed partly on the faith of hopes which apring eternal in the Ministerial breast. Captain Beamish, « magistrate of Cork eounty, has written a letter to Mr. Forster stating that he has received a threatening lette:, and has, therefore, sought the pro- tection of the police. He saya his object in Writing to Mr. Forster is, that if his death should be added te those of other landlords who have been murdered since the present government came into power it eannot be pleaded that it was either justi- fiable or took place because government protection was not called fur in time. The Silk Industry in the United States.

According to a well informed writer in the November ‘‘Atlantic ” as fine a quality ef silk can be raised in the United. States as in any part of the world, but the silk here and reeled as cheeply as the raw silk can be imported from China and Japan. These facts are proved by many experiments in silk cul- ture extending through more than two hnn- dred years and made in aiimost every part of the country. The climate of’ California is ad nirably adapted to silk raising. Co- coons and eggs of excellent quality have been raised there. But those who have en- gage in the industry have found it more profitable to ship the eggs to France than toresrthemfor silk. A_ well effort to make silk culture successful in this coun ‘vy is now in progress in Kansas. Bracing ror Breap,—One of the blalifax despatches which we publish this morning tells a sad tale of how thousands of Nova Seotians in Boston fand the New Englard States are out of werk and actually begging fer bread. The Halifax Mail, a well informed journal, is responsible for the startling state- meut. Who are accountable for this sad state of affairs? Will that portion of the press of Nova Scotia which has seemed to delight in telling of the exodus from day to day con- sider itself free from blame? Will it deny that its paragraphs have incited a desire in the minds of many to leave home for the United States who could never have seriously entertained the idea of quitting their native Province had they not read them’? Let us hope that the great majority of New Bruns- wickers who have left our shores for the United States have fared better than those from our sister Province. Some-of them, no doubt, are doing well, but we fear that the condition of most of them is little better than that of Nova Scotians. The going away of many young men has been productive of a double harm. It has placed themselves in poverty in a strange land, while the expendi- ture of _mozey in fitting them' out for their departare has left their families with so much less to carry them through the win- ter.--St..
