We of the middle generauon can well remember how the German colossus straddled Europe in March 1918. Victorious over Russia and the Balkans, entrenched in Italy, she turned to roll up the Franco- Britlsh armies in the West, and all but succeeded. Under me magni- tude of her exert-ions, her heart was weakened, and in eight months she was overcome. Because we remem- ber, we are not unduly daunted by all these grandiose sweeps to the Northwest and the Southeast.

IV. Not-so-Siow-Brltaln

In the Franco-British partner- ship. France was the military part- ner with an army rliied by the experts as the mos’. efficient 1n Europe; Britain was the naval partner; bath Britain and France were committed heavily to provision of air forces. Had France lived up to iicr military traditions (instead of mumbling "On ne passera pas“ and letting the wasted months go byl the British effort on the sea and 1n the air would" have been _seen to advantage fzr what it ac- tually was-magnificent.

It may well be that (‘iermany will make further diplomatic headway in f-lie Balkans; and we shall hear more talk from journalistic man- darins about British dlplomati: bungling. We must keep our heads in such circumstances. Obviously the ganster state which threatens to roll your cities flat in one breath. and promises you vast new terri- tories in the next breadi, has some tactical advantages over a state which is fighting for a system of 1n- ternational law: the same advant- ages that a Dillinger has over a policeman on a crowded street. If Britain cannot threaten and will not promise on a. scale big enough to compete with Berlin. we need not be ashamed of that. no: need‘ we talk loosely about Brltisl. bungling. After all, the evidence of history does throw some doubt. upon the

legend of British "muddling" and definitely disproves the other old

Above all, it ls our duty to defend the proposition that Britain is fighting for the freedom of man There are plenty of cynics who dfs pute the statement, polnzlng to Ghandl and India, to the crown colonies, to Britain's own army of unemployed whose freedom is cir- cumscribed by extreme poverty. The facts are a suflflclen: answer to specific charges. We know, for ex- amplerthat British power in India. dates frc-m an era when time ethics of imperialist expansion were under no suspicion at all; that Britain proceeds steadily witn (lie task of preparing the Indians for full au- tonomy; and that she cannot pro- ceed more rapidly because at lea four expansionist states would be ready to move into India the mo- ment Britain moved out.

We have seen Britain within re- cent months menaced with invas- ion. On her western flank lies Ire- land, neutral and-by modern standards- almost defenceless. It would have been easy ior Britain, with a, little Nazi ruthiessness. to take over the island and‘ i111 rove her own defences enormous. t. ere- by, But Eire willed otherw se, and Britain accepted the risk for the sake of the principle.

When the battle of Britain was imminent, British local authorities Dlaced in easy confinement two or three score persons whose silly chatter was calculated to induce panic. Within a week or two the British Parliament rang with the protests of memibers vibo saw in the action a threat to the freedom of the individual; and the storm cnly subsided when the Minister of Home Security promise/i personally to review every case. That could happen in the crisis of Britain's peril. It could not happen ln Rome, Berlin or Madrid—nor Warsaw. Prague or Bucharest!

If we teachers of Canada are steadfast and stout of heart, we can almost unaided raise the spirit and tone cf tomorrow's citizenry higher than it has ever been. The slow, experimental groping of the depressed '30's with their social perpicxitles and miSEIPQ was not all in vain; it had w be gone

lthrough, and much of it rejected.

But when we have saved Democ- racy, we free peoples will have the task of making Democracy work; and to that end the disciplines of today's struggle, the leadership we learn to exert, and the lire we kindle in the hearts of youth, will be valuable indeed.

The latter and Alice made for a nearby Dela- ware village. while Hawkcve plan- ned to return fo help Uncas.

Taineiiund decided that the Huron should take his own and depart. Cora pleaded the cause 0f the whites. She persuaded Tamenund to have Uncas come before him.

Chapter XXX

Uncas didn't command the spect of the Delawares until they saw the blue tortoise tattooed on his breast. Then. even Tamenund repented. and the prisoners were freed except Corn, She had been the prisoner of Magus, and was told to depart with hlm. Hawkeye offered to take her place, but Mag- , ua refused.

Chapter XXX!

Uncas watched Cora until she was out of sight. Then he made arrangements for attacking the Hurons. ‘Killdeer’ was brought. to the camp by an Indian boy. Uncas set out with more than two hundred Indians. Before they reached (lie Huron village, they were joined by David, who told them that Cora was in the cave. l-lawkeye with twenty men went to the right, while Uncus with the rest pressed ahead.

Chapter XXXII ' The Scout's party was Joined by David. They engaged the Hurons first. During the struggle they were joined by Munro and Cliing- achgook. Meanwhile, Uncas had

engaged another party of the ene- my and driven them back. Both pariiids of the Delawares then

united and drove the Hurons back to their village where a last stand -was made. Magua and two others escaped the general slaughter. These three, with Cora, started up the mountain. Uncas, Hawkeye, .David, and Hayward followed. Cora ‘was killed by one of the Hurons. Uncas was stabbed to deatli by Magus. Magus was shot by Hawk-

eye. Chapter XXXIII ‘This chapter deals largely with the funeral ceremonies of Cora and Uncas. Montcalms aide and some French soldiers were there. They accompanied Heyward, Munro, Da- vid, and Alice from the camp. ‘Hawkcye remained with Chingnch- igook. Munro died shortly after- wards.
