CONVENT OF MT. CARMEL.

The lawn party in aid of the Convent of

Mt. Carmel! was opened this morning at 10, on the grounds of the institution, Mt Pleasant av, Roxbury. Everything, even the weather, favored the event, which during the day will be replete with features of a most enjoyable kind.

t ince the purchase of the Jand adjoining the convent, the sisters felt that hundreds of friends should be given an opportunity of viewing the grounds, aud the executive committee of the associaticn decided to arrange for a lawn party.

Mr. Timothy L. Counolly, owner of the estate adjoiving, kindly offered the use of his grounds, and in connection with these of the convent a large and pleasing enclos- ure was made.

The advance eale of tickcts was 80 heavy that the reception committee was prepared for a heavy attendance, but the most san~ guine were surprised by the large gather-~ ing early this morning.

Several prettily decorated tables are ar- ranged about the grounds, among which we notice St Anthony’s table presided over by the followizg ladies:—Mrs KJ Ledwell, Miss Hunt, Miss Hanoa Sweeney, Treasurer; Miss Daoahy, Miss Marianne Trainor, Miss Hannah Sullivan, Miss L Chisholm, Miss Angelina Sweeney, Miss Harrigan, Mrs(Dr) McQueeuey, Mrs T E Huseay.

There are a number of atiractions in- clouding a gypsy fortune teller and palmist. This morning a punch and judy show was giveu through the kindness of Mr Lothrop, and this afternoon and evening an excellent concert program will be given under the auspices of St. Anthony table.

The affair is in charge of the executive commitee of which the officers are Miss Kate M Riley pres, Miss Sheridan treas, and Miss Eleanor Sullivan sec.— Boston Daily Globe, Saturday, Sept. 10th.

Mrs. Jacob Layton, with the members of the family that had not already gone to the Island, left Monday morning for their future home at Marsbfield, St. Peter’s Road, P. K. Island. Rev. Mr. Layton is stationed at'this piace. We are exceedingly rorry to Jose so fine a family from our town. All were favorites in every circle in which they moved, and Mrs. Layton’s untiring labors in eyery good cause, while a resident bere tor some 12 months, or so, will be sadly missed. A Disarpointment.—There were some seventeen or eighteen couples on Steam Navigation Company’s wharf yesterday evening about half~past six with baskets and groceries ready and anxious to pro- ceed to Rocky Point, where a party was to be given. But the craft im which it was their intention to embark did _ not materialize, and they could not proceed. The party was probably postponed.

Tue Races.—In connection with the recent races at the Driving Park itis per- haps worthy of note that Provider won both the free-for-all andthe 2.26 classes in etraight heats, never making a break, and ree!ing off each mile under 2.26. He reduced his record to 2.213 on a track that is claimed to be three or four seconds slower this yearthan it was last. Provider was driven by Alier Black, who raised him, and was handled in a skilful manner. Mr. McKie is jusly proud of this choice bit of horse-flesh. [tis un- derstood, hewever, that be will not allow Provider to race again this season.

A Fatse Report.—The report of the suicide of Patrick M Shea, which appear- ed in a Boston papef some days ago, and which was copied into several Island papers, was incorrect in crediting him to Summerside. Mr Patrick M Shea, seu of Mr William Shea, of Summerside, is living ia New Jersey and doing well there as late letters to his parents testify. The man who committed euicide belonged to Woburn, and bad no connection with the family of Mr Wm Shea, Summerside, who have been subjected to a good deal of uanecessary and unpleasant publicity on account of the false report.—Agriculturist
