NEW YORK, Oct. 2- (CP) — A l-4-csnt decline in the pound sterling was the only major change among leading foreign currencies in to~'ay‘s draagy foreign exchange rlcallucs. Sterling dropped to $4.03- l-2 while the Canadian dollar fin- ished unchanged at a discount of ll 3-6 per cent, in relation to Unit- ed States funds. (Ottawa foreign exchange control board rare 9.09- 9.91 per cent discount.)

MONTREAL. Oct. 2 -(CP)—Is- sues moved lndecisively in a shallow ' upove in trading today on the stock market. Pluses had slightly the better of changes and all aver- ages were a bit higher.

Utilities made the best showing, Brazilian, the market leader, win- ning a major fraction improvement while Winnipeg Electric “A" was also firmer. Montreal power could not hold an opening advance and Shawinigan was shaded.

Hollinger was ahead at one time in mines‘ but fell behind while Hud- son Bay M'ning, Consolidated Smelters and International Nickel were softer all day. International Petroleum held on to an increase in oils but Imperial backed up t" even after being harder.

Dryden and St. Lawrence Cor- poration Preferred were better but Price Brothers Preferred was down two points in papers. In other in- dustrlals winners were Canadian C ar and Massey-Harris (New) while behind were Founda- tion, National Steel Car. Canadian Alcohol and General Steel Wares.

Both Canada Steamsh‘p issues were in the plus column and among others boarded Alberta grain was firmer and Dominion Stores weak- er. Total sales: 14.300 shares; indus- trails, 10.300; mines, 4.000.

NEW YORK. Oct. 2-(AP) —'1‘he stock market was doing all right until the second game of the World Series started today when many early buyers shelved commitments and adjoumd to the news tickers.

Virtually all the day's activity centred in oils and low-priced ia- sues. While modest gains were plentiful at the close. declines were widespread.

Canadian stocks were draggy with most issues irregular. Distill- ers Seagram, International Nickel and Walkers all were u changed. Dome, Brazilian ‘Fraction and Im- perial oil each gained I-a of a. point while Ford (A). Ford (B) and Lake Shore each were fractions lower.

The Associated Press average of 60 stocks finished with a net loss of .1 of a point at 43. Transfers of 464,927 shares compared with 368,- 195 the day before.

New lows for the year were post- ed for Westinghouse and Consoli- dated Edison.

TORONTO, Oct, 2 —-(CP) —- The golds were in fine form on the To- ronto stock exchange today and un- der their leadership share volume picked up to 284.010 shares, highest turnover in two weeks.

Volume was Aided by action in two golds prospects, Duquesne‘ and Queenston. On reports ore had been struck at the mine. Duouesne gain- ed 1 3-4 cents to l2 and Queenston. on a favorable diamond drilling re- port, advanced 10 l-\2 cents to 51- 1-2. Both were slghtly off their day's highs.

Most active industrials were Abi- tibi Preferred, off 1-8. C. P. R., un- changed, and Brazilian, un 1-4. The Abitibi issue earlier had touch- ed a new high for the year at 9 1-2. Wesiem oils were dull w‘th Model hitting the year's high at 20, up 2 1-2 cents.

CHICAGO, Oct. 2 —(AP) —- All wheat futures contracts today clos- ed with net losses for the first time in the last l0 market sessions. ' Other grains also were lower, part. of the weakness being due to a sharp break of soybean prices. which finished 1 3-4-3 l-2 cents below previous closing levels.

Wheat rose about l-f cent early in the day due largelv to scattered mill buying. but, when this Wtls ob- aorbed. gains were erased quickly. After holding fairly steadv for a couple of hours, the market weak- ened late in the day and closed 3-8-7-8 lower than yesterday, De- cember $1.22 5-8--3-8, May $127 l-4--1-B.
