Conservatives Will Meet Par- liament on August 4th.

At three o'clock this afternoon the total re- turns received show the election of 31} sup. porters of the Giovernment and 347 members of the Opposition. It is officially an- nounced today, that, as a result of the visit of Lord Salisbury to the Queen at Windsor Castla yesterday the Conserva- tive Government will meet Parliament on August 4th.

Delighted With the Country. Winnipre, July 19. The delegates from the State of Ne- braska, who are now prospecting in the Northwest, have issued a letter stating how delighted they are with the country for mixed farming. They call the valley of the Saskatchewan the farmers’ paradise.

Relief for Newfoundland.

Lonpon, July 15. The Prince of Wales will take the initia- tive in the Grand Lodge of Free Masons for granting a substantial sum to the sufferers by the fire in St. John’s, Newfoundland, from the Charitable Fund at the disposition of the Grand Lodge.

Clendining’s iron foundry and the Canada pipe works were destroyed by fire this after- noon, a8 was Pamsay’s paint and oil works, both establishments being on William Street. Quesec, July 17.—J. X. Perrault of Montreal, delegate to the London congress, arrived here by the Vancouver, and is de- lighted because of the high position taken bythe Dominion. He says Sir Charles Tapper was the ablest man present, and that the policy of preferential duties is gradually making headway amongst the thoughtful men of Great Britain.

Wuyyivee, July 17.—Nominations for the Manitoba general elections took place yesterday and polling will come offa week hence. Four constituencies out of | forty elected members by acclamation. West- bourne returned Mr. M orton,Government ; Woodlands elected Armstrong, Opposition, and Russell James Fisher, Indipendent Liberal. Greenway is opposed in Moun- tain by R. Rogers, who ran him very close four years ago, There are no Greenway candidates running in four French constit- uencies.

The Allan line steamer Nova Scotian ran into a heavy gale the day before reaching St. John’s, N. F., and had two of her boats smashed.

A private despatch from Victoria says that the report of the smallpox epidemic is greatly exaggerated through the medium of the Vancouver press. There are seven deaths so far and fifty-six cases under strictest quarantine.

The London World says: ‘The death of Captain Stairs adds another to the list of graduates of the Canadian Militury College, at Kingston, whose lives have been sacrificed in the discharge of duty in Africa. The officers sent to the imperiel army from the Canadian college are earning for themselves the highest characters, a state of things not, perhaps, to be wondered at, considering the thoroughness of the training they andergo in the Dominion military institution. It seems rather an inopportune moment for Canadian economists to agitate for a closing of the college.”
