Sik,— A few days ago we noticed on the street a Chinaman who, THe Examiner said, had come for the purpose of starting a laundry, lf this be true, is it not che right time for the citizens of Charlottetown to say, in emphatie terms, whether they need ais of these people or nut? Will you just listen a moment to what I have to say? I know considerable of this class of people, and in every case their presence ia a com munity is undesirable. We have uow a Steam Laundry, run by one of our own citizens, which turns out gvol work, em. ploys a number of hands, pays good wa; Les, and, we understand, contributes nearly $75 a year for water and taxes into the city treasury. We have scores of honeat women and gitls who make a livelihood in tbe busi- ness, all of whom spend their money here and live as civilized citizens
Now what are the facts, if this Chinaman is allowed to come antong us. De not be slarnied. Encourage this man, and inside of one month you will have a dozen of them, What will they do? Simply what

Some will say, perhaps, that the world is wide and free, and we should give him a chance. 1 udmit all this, but do you consi- der that by giving these people a chance you are depriving some of your own people of achance, and who has the most claim on your generosity /—a man from a nation of corruption or your own neighbor? Dves the society of Charlottetown need any of this element? Will our people gain any- thing by their presence among us ?
Now what isthe remedy! A very sim- ple one. If you say youdo not want these men, all you have to do is simply to say so— and say sonow. And when the washy shop opens up, John will take the hint that he is not wanted when no work comes in, and will sven walker.

Hattrax, July 4.—The codfishery did | fairly to-day at the fishing ports along the southern coast of Quebec, good at Shippe- igan, N. B., and very well at Miminigash. On the northern shore of P. E. Island, -at ‘Malped%e, "the catch was faiz: Onthe Cape Breton coast fair hauls were made at Port | Hood and Arichat, and at the former place

At Port Medway itis very good, and fair at Liver- pool and Lockeport, The mackerel fishery igreported fair in the vicinity of Mimini- | gash, anda few are being taken allthe way around the coast at Alberton, In Cape Bre- ton it is fair at Port Hood, St. Ann’s, Ari- chat and St. Peter’s. In Nova Scotia the only good catch reported was at Lunen- burg. There are good indications all along the coast in that locality. Herring sre reported fair at Perce and Newport Point, Quebec, and at Port Hood, St Anns and St Peters, C B. Some fat ones are reported in the nets at Canso, and the catch was good at Lunenburg, fair at Y Lockport and Liverpool. The lobster fac- tories at Fox Bay, Anticosti and Shippegan, N B, are repairing their trap: and prepar- ing for work again.

The annual competition of the above As- sociation was held on the Georgetown Rifle Range on Thursday the 2nd inst. This meeting was largely attended, there being

The Souris men, who appeared in uniform, and who presented a very soldierly appearance, were received with cheers, this being the first time that they took part in the competitions of the Associa- tions. We are pleased to find their names on the prize list, though they fired under many disadvantages, the chief of them being that of having no previous practice on the range.
