Sra, —Our local Douglas Jerrold seems to be amused over the fact that he has been proved a pagan and an atheist. Certainly { do not envy him his so-called amusement. He may consider my conclusions unchari- *! table ones, but they are none the less true. He has not attemped to disprove them, nor has he made even the sh .de of an assertion to their contrary. Instead, as is too often the case, he seeks to hide his defeat by fly- ing to another part of the field and asking the question ‘Is dogmaa benefit to man- kind or no?” In other words, ** Is dogma the friend or the enemy of science ?”
In offering my remarks, my intention is not to follow him to every nook and corner to which he may fly when dislodged from any position ; for anyone will admit that a daily or weekly newspaper cannot afford sufficient space for a lengthy reply. 1 therefore take for granted that God exists, and that he has revealed certain truths. Thesa two propositions can be proved to any fair-minded man. These given, \ frankly assert that faith and reason, and consequently dogma and science, are

What Voltaire was to France, so was Hume to Britain, and as the former's disciple,

Again, your correspondent imagines that the object of dogma can in no case be the object of science. This is erroneous. The existence of God is a dogmatic truth ; it cam also be proved from reason, while the same may be said of scores of other dogmas. If, cherefore, such truths can be known by dogma, and by reason, his assertion that dogmatic teaching discourages enquiry is false and slanderous. He imagines dogma to be “an assertion without proof.” False again. Faith, as well as science, does not exact a blind submission. Even reason submits to authority, provided that it be convinced of the truth of the propos- ition to which its assent is demanded. Now, reason can be convinced in @ two- fold manner—the une immediate the other mediate. When it apprehends the intrin- sic truth of a proposition it is © mvinced immediately; when the proposition is pre- sented by one whom it knows cannot de- ceive or be deceived, it is convinced med - iately.
